Bartolomé making a bench with stones from the Can Mado oven. News came at 11 of the death of his aunt by cancer (Francisco the carpenter's wife) so he knocked off. Went to Margarita for my new trousers: not started, of course.

To Palma for bull-fight at 11.30
It should have been Lalanda, Armillita, Ortega; but Lalanda had sprained his ankle in a bull fight in France, and Armillita is a Mexican and the Mexican bullfighting dispute is still unsettled, so we had Curro Caro and Pericas. Curro Caro was brave but nervous and the bulls were very large and to be nervous about. Pericas's first visit to
Mallorca
Palma
(his native city) as a matador so he had stage fright and was knocked down by his first bull not gored and lost consciousness until after the fight. Ortega was better than ever and from our good seats (17 pesetas) we could see him close and hear him talking to the bull. Curro Caro threatened, Ortega commanded. Mira me, toro!

when he had him in position told him to wait a moment while he killed him. Ortega got ears and tail for Perica's bull, no other awards, though there was a protest that C.C. didn't get something for his last bull, which he killed well, taking advantage of his tallness.
We met in Palma the Tio's (Pedro & Catalina) Castañer & 4 nieces, and Barcelo's daughter and son-in-law.
Lena's was awful. Francisca stayed in Palma, the maestroschool-master K.G. returned with us.

In morning Alicecat eds. who has had a war with SolomonGraves' dog eds. for months brought her kitten, drowned, into his kennel as if either to reproach him for being the cause of its having to be kept away from the house, or (more likely)

to make us think its death was due to his violence. He got greatly excited over the corpse but did not maul it. Alice is pregnant again, too.
The other side's lawyer has put in a sick-certificate at the trial today, to tide over the Boy trouble.

A little sun, but clouded over again immediately. Men working again, removing top olive from drive and replanting it below, Bartolome making frame of cement to put a cover over the pit, & continuing shrubbery path.
Laura gave me job of going on with Schools by myself. Last night worked on Chinese, this morning on Indian school systems.
In evening Laura went over more Antigua with me, in afternoon we went over what I had written about Politics & Poetry and Gelat & Medora came & former explained danger Nuns are in of getting their school
convent closed as well as school, because they have canvassed against the
maestra
school-mistress K.G. who is now turning nasty, though previously prepared to exchange. At Bañalbufar the people turned out to prevent inspector serving notice on nuns, & inspector to avoid bloodshed(Guardia CivilesCivil Guards K.G. were ready to fire) drove off.

Gelat came with a long report. The Education committee referred the maestraschool-mistress K.G.'s complaint to the mayoralty, Gelat called a meeting of parents, one of whom (was prompted to) brought up question of her nationality – This was put in writing: if she consents to exchange she won't be turned out. If she doesn't she will.
The water thing is practically settled. Gelat has conditioned that a certain pipe be put at the fuentespring K.G. source to go down to the claimants. This leaves half the water to him, and he will divert the stream to the depositoresevoir K.G. which will always remain full: & he has hours free from 4 in the morning to 9 every day. The road business shelved, apparently to save the staff-colonel's face. The school may be built for nothing by applying for 5 units (3 schoolrooms, library, doctor's consulting room) at 12,000
