                  <rs type="person" ref="ref:AL1">Arnie Lawrence</rs> eds.</note> Graves drafts several poems, including <q>Labyrinth,</q>
               <q>Gulls and Such</q> (later <q><bibl><rs type="cita" ref="ref:GaM">Gulls and Men</rs></bibl></q>) and <q><bibl><rs type="cita" ref="ref:NNA">A Note on Natural Affections</rs></bibl>.</q>

            <p>
This month <rs type="person" ref="ref:JJ1">Joän Junyer</rs> introduces Graves and <rs type="person" ref="ref:LR1">Riding</rs> to <rs type="person" ref="ref:DH1">Dorothy</rs> and <rs type="person" ref="ref:WH1">Ward Hutchinson</rs>. Ward Hutchinson agrees to write an article on photography for <bibl><rs type="cita" ref="ref:EpI"><hi rend="font-style: italic;">Epilogue</hi></rs></bibl>, and Riding writes to him about his poems, which she does not find particularly original or note-worthy (writes Graves, <q>she only <supplied>found</supplied> two short sequences of poetry which were all right in his book. The rest merely traditional, or ornate</q>). Despite Riding's unfavourable critique of his poetry, Hutchinson finishes the <hi rend="font-style: italic;">Epilogue</hi> article, which is sent off to the printer.</p>
            <p>
In the meantime, Riding continues to struggle with <bibl><rs type="cita" ref="ref:ATE"><hi rend="font-style: italic;">A Trojan Ending</hi></rs></bibl>, and Graves reviews Sulamith Ish-Kishor's <hi rend="font-style: italic;">Magnificent Hadrian</hi> for the <bibl><rs type="cita" ref="ref:Obs"><hi rend="font-style: italic;">Observer</hi></rs></bibl>, pronouncing it <q><supplied>w</supplied>retched stuff.</q>
            </p>
            <p>
Graves is pleased about his renewed contact with family. His children write to thank Riding for her gift of £1<note>one pound eds.</note> each. Graves notes a difference in the children's tone since <q>the Devil</q> (<rs type="person" ref="ref:NN1">Nancy Nicholson</rs>'s lover, <rs type="person" ref="ref:GP1">Geoffrey Phibbs</rs>) has left and married another woman. Graves writes back to the children and sends Nancy £150. Graves also writes to his brother <rs type="person" ref="ref:JG1">John</rs>, indicating his hope that <rs type="person" ref="ref:DG1">David</rs> will travel before he enters Oxford. Later he is clearly irritated by David's preference for Cambridge, apparently encouraged by Nancy Nicholson's comment that <q>much the nicest people</q> go there. Graves also hears from <rs type="person" ref="ref:HW1">Honor Wyatt</rs>, who writes to tell Graves and Riding she won't be returning to <rs type="place" ref="ref:Dey1">Deyá</rs> this year after all.</p>
            <p>
This month Graves and Riding purchase the rights to a spring from <rs type="person" ref="ref:BC1">Bernardo Colom</rs> and begin constructing a shed at <rs type="place" ref="ref:Can15">C'an Torrent</rs>, <rs type="person" ref="ref:NC1">Norman Cameron</rs>'s former residence, which they had purchased earlier.
