Afternoon walk to Moorish Castle via Ca'n Cat C'an Quet and back by Son Ripoll: investigated caves there. Strenge & Carl coolness over.

In evening came Ferres & Kurtz, & he talked communism, hard, against Laura. Blamed England's wavering policy. Battered away – I was very sleepy & mixed my drinks, felt sick, had to go to bed.

To village to buy sheepheadsfor dog. KG, stir up Miguel to get picture frames & netting done, take stuff to Margarita, ask Catalina to whitewash, warn Sebastian that the goat was loose on Son Canals land, leave packet for Karl at Old Café, inquire after Medora Madora ,order cigarettes from Valldemossa . Heavy, heavy day with boira and a few drops of rain.

Rosa came, brought my silk nightshirts & socks: also two old Mallorquin waistcoats & a skirt with painted spots which we bought for 18 pesetas in all.

Monday May 6th

Mesquida whitewashed by Catalina & Maria Magdalena Martina. C.F.V. all morning. Laura lay in bed reading Jane Austen.

Lunch at Can Torrent.

Still heavy weather, but somewhat better. Have now done four short chapters of C.F.V., about 9,000 words. Another 6,000 words will bring story up to the point where the film begins. Have reached the death of Augustus.

Put back plates etc in the Mesquida: decided on some furniture to go to Posada.

New cups from Palma.

On walk with SalamoRG's dog. eds met two carters trying to raise a mule fallen on or slippery asphalt.

C.F.V. all morning. Laura in bed. EntradaEntrance hall. WG whitewashed. Did not get up till 2 o'clock when Gelat came and we discussed the car question. Gelat explained expense & trouble of keeping one ourselves; said that he had had the idea himself of giving up camiónbus. KG business to Juan, now that he was no longer young, and devoting himself to work here, and having a single small car to go into Palma with occasionally, with us. He will look out for one. Went with him to see men working on road. Village.

Strenge ragging Emmerich. Letter from Oman, with dilatory reply to German question. Letter from H.S Harrison Smith showing 8500 sales in 3 weeks of C.G. Claudius the God and a bunch of cuttings including one congrat ing America on having at last a historical novel of international standard.

Gelat & Bernado came late. Gelat with sample tile (hexagonal) from Hotel Florida, bought cheap. Margaret Russell sent Jubilee souvenir.

C.F.V. then working with Laura & Karl rearranging the books & papers in the press-room: Miguel had brought the inking table. Also putting up paddle from mill of Can Medo Can Mado , beasts (framed by Miguel) in John's? KG room, birds at Can Torrent."beasts" and "birds" are prints. KG/eds Laura & I designed round table from Can Torrent.

All afternoon rearranging library. To Can Medo where pipes were laid, finished today.

Louis Golding came & talked books; his own, also mine. L. Laura Riding & I rather severe but he didn't behave badly. A hardened novelist.

Began pasting pictures on press-room composition-frame cover.

To Gelat late with Laura & Karl. Gelat will look out for a motor-bicycle for Karl.

Heavy day again.

Bright weather; boira descended again at 11. Miguel the youngerone of four village carpenters. WG came to saw bore hole in beam for Mesquida second lamp.

C.F.V. a little, and playing general post again with new pictures and ornaments until they were quite right.

Done 2/3rds now. Thunder & rain but only a shower. Hippotame Hippopotome engraving; an early depiction of a Hippopotamus. It is still in [Canellun] with prints of various other animals drawn by hearsay. WG came. Letter from Honor that she will definitely arrive 22nd; & bring boat etc. Letter from E.M. Eddie Marsh saying that have won Hawthornden prize. If I can't come can cancel ceremony. Replied, couldn't.

Letter from A.B. Arthur Barker about List Verlag: who in his latest quarterly returns only admits having sold 1800 copies — having boasted the book was in its 10th edition.

Eyes tired by proofs which have now gone over. At night Kurtz & Ferres to coffee at Ca'n Torrent: she goes tomorrow.

No further news all day, though car from Palma expected, to collect the stuff. Slept in afternoon.

Sudden downpour the first heavy rain for weeks. Josepha to prepare supper because I. Isabel not well, tired out by all this fuss from her family about her sleeping at C. Canellun or not .

This is the day Honor (& Gordon?) start. Wedding of Antonio Cas Pintat & Martine? B.G. of the Casa Guapa: wedding breakfast in New Café: chocolate, ensaimadaslocal pastry. WG, cream ices, sherry, champagne, sponge-cakes, cigarettes, cigars, bags of sweetssugar-coated almonds. KG to take home. St. Strenge to lunch ( Sch Schwarz in Barcelona) Finished the picture-pasting & varnished over. Rainy day.

Went to Viña Vieja to prepare house for Honor & Co. Women doing L Laura 's bedroom. Wire from E.M. Eddie Marsh "Almost no hope: sinking." Got Gelat to put motor in goingRefers to power plant before turbina. WG to provide power for radio. Listened in but couldn't get news through.

To Palma with Amador: Str. Strenge came with us because Schw. arrives tomorrow early. Listened in at Short's 5 p.m. Unchanged.

Went and bought things. Laura's turquoise ring at Marg. Mat Margarita Mateu 's. Also curtain for her room; lace length; for table, three more silhouettes for Pos Posada , yellow bits for mesquida table, Ibizenca scarf. Three wicker chairs for Posada. At Pomar's I got a light gold ring 25 pts. which we gave to Str. Strenge because she was upset; and chose a baroque pearl necklace to be strung by an hour later for 140 pts. Laura liked it. She & Karl talked things over with Sabater. Got 400 odd pts from Short and he helped me send off T.E. T.E. Lawrence 's self-written obit obituary by airmail to Pinker to be used only in case of. Cabled to Pinker that it was coming.

Listened in at 9.15p.m. but no news obtainable.

Rosa came: cushions for press-room sofa etc.

Black painted catches on patio door.

Women doing Laura's workroom, only dusting, not whitewashing as smoky yellow colour pleasing.

All afternoon at Viña Vieja and Can Gelat: both women, L Laura , Karl & myself. Brought furniture, eventually for Posada, in donkey cart with Sebastian: just escaped rain-storm. Made both houses suitable & clean, putting up pictures, hangings, shelves etc.

DepositoGelat's reservoir built for the water turbine. WG will be finished by Wednesday: two days lost by rainy weather. The man will come & mount turbine on Monday.

Wrote to Westminster Bank for brown paper parcels to be sent here by sea.

At nine o'clock listened in at village but could not get station until 1/2 way through news. "This morning's bulletin stated his right lung (lobe?) affected." Don't know if this was him or not.

Sunday May 19th

No telegram yet from Short. Went to baker & paid 2½ months bill - 140 pts. And paid 50 on account at Estanco. Felt rotten. Wrote to Mother.

Karl came; had told Emmerich about her effect on Str Strenge 's nerves. Emmerich felt insulted. I had to go along to talk her quiet, representing Str Strenge as ill.

In afternoon locked up and slept till 5. Then to village. Laura over-tired.

Apparently Gordon is coming: letter for him. Late went to hear radio at New Café: could only get a German newstation- heard T.E. T.E. Lawrence bulletin, but missed the important sentence.

Louis Golding's Five Silver Daughters came: we found it incredibly bad.

New law: licence for dogs & bicycles needed. S'sSalamo's. KG licence is 10 pesetas.

To village: plates & cups & things for Viña Vieja. Table from Fábrica too.

Then all morning at Viña and Can Gelat: putting up mosquito nets, mirrors, shelf paper etc. Laura has appendix trouble: went to bed on her return.

To Calabat to pay for hen: ordered another.

Picked another 2 lbs of strawberries.

News from Short via Gelat that T.E T.E. Lawrence died Saturday night. Cable from Pinker that obituary published in E.Standard tonight. From Cape asking permission reprint L & A Lawrence and the Arabs at 4/64 shillings sixpence per copy? eds 10%. Replied, Yes.

Laura had a bad night with dysentry. Supplied her with hot-bottles & tea.

Terrific rain at 7 am . Then bright day.

Waited at Viña Vieja for Honor Gordon etc until 12 built fire, fetched groceries. They came, brought four necklaces for Laura, (two a present from Lucy, two on approval) razor for me, & for Gelat, shaving brush for me, boat (customs 287 pesetas) witchhazel, cream for Laura, scent, scent bottle & brooch from Lucy. Laura a bit better.

Rest of day spent talking to them & Mary Philips. Baby Julian, Honor and Gordon's son. WG shown to village.

Re-wrote letter to A.G. Amy Graves , went over three chapters of C.F.V., did some transcopying. To village to get Carmen to help Honor etc. in Catalina's absence. Wet Damp, heavy day. Went over final Epilogue points with Laura. Len's Film Making (& L Laura 's) put in at last moment.

Picked 2 lbs of strawberries.

Solomon given worm doses.

Hot bath in afternoon.

Gelat & Bernardo came: Gelat discussed buying Bernardo's spring - only pretence really, to make people think that no water will go from Molí spring. DoctorDr. Antonio Vives, the village doctor ( Médico ): at odds with Gelat. WG's machinations again defeated.

Gelat is getting my chair made of cherry wood from Ca'n Juni.

Went to village: to Can Juni; there are more plums and apricots than I expected. On return felt worse, went to bed.

Still rather shaky. Went on with transcopying C.F.V. Then did proofs of Progress of Stories all morning and afternoon: transcopied corrections in another copy for James Reeves. Letter from Pinker about £50 from America for the Lawrence affairregarding T.E. Lawrence's obituary? eds: from Constable saying they have talked to Eliot about Collected Letters.

Juan brought carboncharcoal. KG.

Cold day: wore furry boots.

First really fine day for a month.

Went into Palma at 8 o'clock, L Laura , C Carl & I, because Gelat had a secret: it turned out that he had swapped the old Chandler 9 years old & the Donet (worn out) for a nearly brand-new Hupmobile + 3000 pesetas. We came back in it.

Exchanged new ladle for old + 5 pesetas. Bought rope-girdle for myself & Waterman fountain pen (36 pesetas). For the Mesquida (at Nell? KG) a 20 year old flower-painted tray. A shell necklace for Honor (8 pesetas) & ring with emeralds (25 pesetas). Socks etc for Gordon. Black & gold stuff for shirt for me. (Carl, stuff for 5 shirts)I bought! -KG

Gelat appeared with key of Posada. The Cura had been shocked to find that he didn't get the 150 pesetas himself but begged the lawyer that nobody should know. Gelat told us of his challenge to the médico to a personal duel. The médico did not leave his house that day. His relations extorted a promise from him that he would leave Gelat alone, if Gelat did nothing further. Gelat said he had said GuardiasCivil guards: police. KG or no guardias, judge or no judge, either you or I or, perhaps both, will go (to) the cementariochurchyard, cemetary. KG. & I'd have run him down with the camiónbus, or lorry. KG – you know how easily these things happen.

Bought myself 5 pairs of alpargatasrope-soled sandals. KG (1 red, 1 blue, 1 yellow, 2 white)

We came back. Went to see the Posada with Honor & Gordon & Mary. Everyone delighted. Honor said The nicest house in Deyá. Gelat said: Viña Vieja furniture will be at your disposal soon, because it is to be rented unfurnished. Gelat is also going probably to rent half Fábrica as a caféit was the lower half. KG etc.
