In afternoon checking proofs of J.R. James Reeves James's Poems. eds again with Laura while girls startedstoning the plums for the plum jam. Made the damson — 11 lbs & sealed up. A little Richards. Boiled up some old marmalade which had gone sugary.

Proofs with Laura until about 3 o'clock. Then posted them.

August 2 Friday.

Up at 10: made jam. Used Fábrica cauldronmade of copper. KG which 'caught' all the time. Transferred to our own enamel preserving pan & stainless steel saucepan.

Made 8 2lb pots & 6 1lb. Richards. Fixed wire on Schw. peacock bowli.e. gift from Schwarz? eds & hung up in entradahall. KG; also stag bowl, exchanged with Troy for rabbit picture. Laura having first rest for weeks.

At sea which was roughish: cool wind: various things on shore, including dragon — for blasted heath tree & nest and a lot of husks of palm–tree branches. KG etc. Found wristwatch lost since day before yesterday at foot of cala–rock where I hadhad a tussle with SolomonGraves' dog. eds who again would not come up rock because I was not dressed.

Aug 3rd Saturday.

The day that the Mesquida table was moved, end up to the Mesquida picture: L Laura & I sitting opposite each other. Other changes, which sent a plate over to Can Torrent & fixed the inlaid table in the screen corner.

Made blackberry & apple jelly: in the middle Laura wanted to read out her contingent will instructions to executors. We worked on these until 2 a.m. In the middle I tried to squeeze the juice through a cloth but it went wrong & I made a lot of mess, & waste.

I got supper, made ice, cleared away. Laura kept Karl employed for several hours.

Josefa told me that it was the 9th of the month — from Laura's the Señora's calendar. Laura's diary nearly a month out of reckoning.

Cooller Cooler .

Got up very late, shortly before lunch.

At 2 o'clock decided to go to a bull–fight. Went. Karl, Juan, L Laura & I. Laura in yellow with net gloves & amethyst ring.

Matadors: Jaime Noain, PepeGallardo, Rodrigo FernandoDominguez. Procession of Misses in cars around the arena & 3 bands. Noain's first bull very weak; let off banderillosbanderillas are one metre sticks covered in coloured paper with a barb on the end which are stuck in the bull's neck. WG. Gallardo's very cowardly wouldn't face horses: took a long time to kill: second remainder better but the matadors though hardworking & going through all the motions didn't appeal. Noain got ears. Gallardo goodish in second bull but took four shots at the discabello descabello to kill a lying bull with daggerlike sword by piercing its nape. KG. Dominguez second bull — in half-dark — earned claps for a picadorriding master. eds, among the few that were given. Do. Dominguez got a cogidawound caused by bull's horns. KG in right through the fleshy part ofleg and elbow (we[?] think) (lying on his face while the bull attacked him) but insisted on continuing & killed at first attempt: then carried to hospital. Got ears.Biscuit glacé at Alhambra 4 coñacscognacs. eds & beefstake beefsteak sandwiches. KG. G. Gelat reference to Gelat,confirmed by KG, indicates that it was Gelat (Juan Marroig)and not his son Juan who accompanied LR and RG to the bullfight that day. eds gave us information confirming our ideas about S.St.? KG thinks unlikely to be Schwarz and Strenge. eds

On the way back from Alhambra near Gordiola saw the procession of (15th?) Century horsemen with candles in cupped sticks resting on their stirrups, red-coated guards & an illuminated Catalina Santa Catalina. KG coach with Bengal flares & four horses pulling children in Mallorquin costume, and singing Republican anthem.

July 8 Monday August 5th Monday

Wrote to Bank, asking them to for Laura paid Isabel's mother's fare on condition that same stays.

Dream about strange hall of a house in 1900-ish London: over the door a faded print called In the Gay Old Days. The Duke of Westminster celebrates his Coming of Age in the Company of 10,000 Ladies of the Town. The D. of W, a long-faced fair-haired young man in evening dress, elbows on knees staring greedily forward: in the middle of an auditorium full of girls with doll faces and wasp-waists.

Girls boiled up the blackberry & apple jelly which I poured out & sealed: it made 12 small pots, very stiff. AlgarrobasSt. John's bread. KG; carob bean, locust bean. WG falling.

Richards Old Soldier Sahib eds. all morning. Laura has bad stomach. Afternoon, sea: buried stinking corpse of a kid on foreshore,in company with the Staff-Colonel staying at Son Bauza, who was grateful on account of his wife & children with him. Laura going over Fantasia & writing a letter to Constable about business namesfor Seizin Press. KG. We went through Documents. New arrangement made for files. I wrote to Eliot asking him to approve Wills of both & return; to Pinker asking Hogarth Press's profit-sharing scheme, what percentage; to Westminster enclosing our joint-account application.

For second time running got salt-water into the iceice cream. KG. Finished going over Richards manuscript so far as he sent it. Gelat came & told us about enquiries he made about the spy, whom the Police know nothing about, may be a Private Cop. Also about Pedro & his shameless brother in law?? eds. & political moves now taken to settle water dispute.

In afternoon sea with Karl: found a few pebbles. (Sea warmer than air, cloudy day)

Started a poem: no use I think.

To village with Laura & Carl (first time for a long time) & Schw. Schwarz to whom gave pot of blackberry & apple jelly.

Child lost an eye, from playing ballon San JuanSt. John's Day [fiesta]. KG . Third child this year to lose an eye (11 years, 11 years, 5 years — detonator, stone thrown, ball on elastic.)

Laura visited Carmen. I cross–copied Fantasia, 2 copies (3 hours). One copy to John Aldridge.

Aug 7 Wednesday.

First greenfigs, from G Gelat 's Vinyet: very hot, tiring weather.

Went over my checks of first ch. chapter of Cressida's Troywhich became A Trojan Ending? eds. with Laura: at Troya room in their house, formerly called "sewing room". KG, eds.. Mostly points about Priam's & Aenaeas's ancestry, which Laura finally stabilized. Then checked second chapter for Laura who wrote to Len; & Karl's transcription of Fantasia. At 12 o'clock Laura went over points of Richards' first chapter with me.

Bed at 2.

Laura dictated letters (to Karl)— Korda, Sabater. I went to sea (about 15 Catalans). Cloudy & hot. Then to village for morning post: half James' proofsof James's Poems. eds from Sabater, which I checked. Remainder by afternoon post. Went over my checks in Troy with Laura discussing, chiefly, Menelaus's spare spear, and what became of it. Laura finally stuck it butt–spiked into the ground.

Pots came from Palma, & sugar: but no plums yet. Hot wind

Laura got off two chapters of Troy to Constable with a letter. Laura & I went over James's proof, finishing it at 1 p.m. all except a point that only James can supply.

Laura decided on a rest now for a few days.

Aug 9th Friday

Put up fixture for Carl's mosquito net.

Hair cut.

Richards' answers to questions on Chs 2,3 & 4 came. Worked up one passage. A. Lawrence sent letter acknowledging cheque from hospital at Bovingdon Bovington Camp. Margaret Russell had not after all left: I wrote telling her it was all right about the money.

Wrote to Richards.

Took down coat of armsFrom over fireplace: gilt carved–wood Royal arms, salvaged by Gelat from town–hall in 1931, after change to republic. Robert [Graves] used to say he bought it for 5 pts. KG for fear of misinterpretation.

Worked until 2 incorporating Richards' answers in text, ready for Carl to type. Laura wrote to James, about Humour Music"Humour Music" as single title has not been identified, but Riding and James Reeves did collaborate on a piece entitled "Humour and Poetry as Related Themes" which was published in Epilogue III. eds. etc, & about Schools, which she then read to me; also rewrote James's blurb.

Sebastian upset that tomatoes are unbottled & going to waste.

Sala completed today; only windows not in yet.

Carl to Palma about passport: which was all right.

Got letters in village: Interested one from H.S. Harrison Smith — which I answered, proposing terms for Richards $150 ($100 + $50) advance, 12 1/2% to 3000copies. KG, then 15%: me to do an introduction, payments to be (2/3rd) made to him & also (1/3) direct to me, book to be in H.S Harrison Smith 's hands by December 1. And from Honor. Gordon with Molly again! Mrs GloverGordon's mother. KG gave Honor permission to have another chap. And Gordon at St Peter's Square! Hammersmith. KG

Rosa came; fitting of Laura's grand dress with the bows. Got Catalina to come at 2 & do plums greengages which came in great quantity. She came & in 1 hour she & her little boy & I did 12 kilos which I then boiled up into jam — 12 2–lb jars & 12 1lb 6 1–lb jars & a 1lb pot; & she and the girls did 21 bottles of tomatoes with the powders. Sent 6 various jars to Fábrica.

To Soller in the new car: L Laura & I, with Gelat & Carl. We had supper at the MarinaSoller Port. KG & it was very peaceful

G. Gelat told us about Maria Fidevera & the doctorthe Médico[?] eds, & latter's danger at Hieronymo'sJeronimo, husband of Maria. KG hands. Today he bought a radio on approval. We decided to buy a gas–plantbutane. KG.

Very oppressive weather. Laura & I talked of supper at Costa d'Or but didn't go. Laura wrote "We are the Resurrection" poem & read it to me: went over my recent poems with me. It was agreed to scrap Address to Myself & I to rewrite two more. To village, where Gelat told us of a visit to the road(our road) KG of another colonel, disguised as a peasant.

Gelat came with Palonithe donkey. KG from the Vinyet brought figs: told us details of his investigation. It is known about the denunciodenunciation. KG in the village & also Gelat's likelihood of finding out the name. In the morning went over and added to my introduction to the Richards book Old Soldier Sahib. eds. Same in the afternoon, apart from Sea. A very cool day; sea rough but warm. At the village practised dance–steps with Laura in the Sala. Then did the translation gap between Karl's part of Almost Forgotten TimesSee Almost Forgotten Germany. eds and Thelin's. Today I wore my Mallorquin waistcoat with the many pewter buttons for the first time.

At 4 o'clock heard mewing from garden. Found new-born black kitten in the pimientogreen pepper. KG–bed. Laura came out & cherished it.

Grapes ripe in garden, also two cucumbers and (so far) one melon. Orange plant near drive flowering.

Laura gave the kitten milk, Aliceits mother. KG growling & refusing to have anything to do with it.

Worked at Poets. In the afternoon, walk with Karl along the coast to the hotel Hotel Costa d'Or. KG & then back. Mentioned the folboatthe collapsible boat they bought at Gamages. WG (for which Short only offers 300pts) to hotel & to Ferrars. Laura asleep. Kitten died.

Then home. I did work on Poets. At 4.30, inauguration of Sala with ices & champagne. (Laura wearing her John Ewen dress)

KG (green), mint, marjoram, lemon verbena, rosemary, lemon-rind, samphire, sultanas, chutneypowder, pepper, mace, cinnamon, brown sugar, white sugar, ginger, garlic, mustard, onions, vinegar & thegreen tomatoes themselves.

Went over Old Soldiers typing. 150 pp pages of R. Richards 's orig. original mss manuscript expanded to 180 pp of text. At this all day. (Laura writing poem for anthology for me to cooperate with.)

Went to Son Canals for Bernardo's fiestaname-day. KG. There met his sister & niece from Marseilles and arranged a dance for Saturday, at 8 o'clock at Canellun. Joke about being denounced for pickle-making.

Then to Sala, listened to dance-music on the new radio.

On return Laura gave Carl further instructions for Sabater.

New supply of oil: also charcoal: last of the plums. To sea.

Gelat told me about signatures & that Gerardo Tomas would privately speak to the judge about the case, & that the Señorproprietor. KG of the Pedrissa was not standing by the opposition any more.

Sent off Richards' typescript 5 chapters (to p 113) asking him to forward to Morley.

Laura tired in bed all afternoon: I made steak & onions for supper.

Wire from Kilham Roberts wanting to use on only the end part of Letter from Majorcafor The Year's Poetry 1934. eds. We replied no, use small print if necess. necessary but no cutting.It was therefore refused by the editors, and published in Focus IV later that year.(see Wexler 51) eds

Gas came: 100 pesetas deposit necessary but the old primus was getting dangerous. Gelat brought a man to graft vines. He did it in somewith tiny buds cut from a stock & tied into a cut below the earth then bound round & earthed over. Gelat discussed possibility of buying the upper bancali.e. terrace above Canellun. KG; dry stone terracing. WG in a few days.

Sea. A spray of flowering asparagus. There was about a sackfull of shelled almonds from the Posada: i.e. about 25 peseta worth. The algarrobasSt. John's bread. KG; carob bean, locust bean. WG are now all down, waiting for rain to swell them for market. Hibiscus about to flower.

Almost no olives this year & the ones there are will make bad oil, G Gelat says.

Aug 29 Thursday

Money from L. Laura letterher Letter from Majorca[?] KG, just clearing expenses.

Gelat came to make things right about the signing. Talked of possibility of extending Canellun beyond the grotto & above the viejo camino old path. KG: possible, if Bernardo takes over part of the land that is for sale from Ca l'Abat.

Did Chapter XVI of A.F.T. Almost Forgotten Times Heavy day, went to the Piñets to the top: a few olives there, after all. Gelat burned down some carritx esparto. KG grass & set fire to an olive tree: he didn't think it would burn but it was one of the twisted sort & had a central flue and there was no earth so no chance of quenching the flames. A number of seedling pines which Gelat says he will let grow train up for the looks. The top olive trees only useful for firewood. It made a nice torch at night.

Laura drank several whiskeys (difficulty with work) & then we went to Str Strenge & Sch. Schwarz who gave us punch (hot water, muscatel, cognac & lemon peel) & then we went to the two cafés & the Fonda & the Fábrica, drinking and spreading alegriajoy. KG.

A.F.T. Almost Forgotten Times Chapter XVII. Then to sea, abstractedly bathed, thinking about Lawrence material.i.e. his letters? eds On return wrote to Liddell Hart suggesting joint book of materia historica: but haven't sent it off yet — wait for L Laura 's ideas.
