	Tomatoes in great quantities now and aubergines just starting, also pimientos<note>green peppers. KG</note>.</p>
            <p> Not up until 12.</p>

               <rs type="person" ref="ref:Am1">Amador</rs> came with damsons &amp; green plums &amp; sugar.</p>
            <p> Post in <rs type="place" ref="ref:Dey1">Deyá</rs> by <foreign>Ferrocarril</foreign><note>Railway Company. KG</note>
               <foreign>camión</foreign><note>bus. KG</note> at 11, another post out at 5. This saves a day.</p>
            <p> In afternoon checking proofs of <rs type="person" ref="ref:JR1"><choice>

                  </choice></rs><note>
                  <bibl><rs type="cita" ref="ref:JPo"><hi rend="text-decoration: underline;">James's Poems</hi></rs></bibl>. eds</note> again with <rs type="person" ref="ref:LR1">Laura</rs> while girls started<add hand="ref:h_RG" place="supralinear">stoning</add> the plums for the plum jam. Made the damson — 11 lbs &amp; sealed up. A little <rs type="person" ref="ref:FR2">Richards</rs>. Boiled up some old marmalade which had gone sugary.</p>
            <p> Proofs with <rs type="person" ref="ref:LR1">Laura</rs> until about 3 o'clock. Then posted them.</p>
            <p> Beautiful storm out to sea: no thunder

	Up at 10: made jam. Used <rs type="place" ref="ref:Fab02">Fábrica</rs> cauldron<note>made of copper. KG</note> which 'caught' all the time. Transferred to our own enamel preserving pan &amp; stainless steel saucepan.</p>
            <p> Made 8 2lb pots &amp; 6 1lb. <rs type="person" ref="ref:FR2">Richards</rs>.
 Fixed wire on <rs type="person" ref="ref:Sw1">
Schw.</rs> peacock bowl<note>i.e. gift from Schwarz? eds</note> &amp; hung up in <foreign>entrada</foreign><note>hall. KG</note>; also stag bowl, exchanged with Troy for rabbit picture.
 <rs type="person" ref="ref:LR1">Laura</rs> having first rest for weeks.</p>
            <p> At sea which was roughish: cool wind: various things on shore, including dragon — for blasted heath tree &amp; nest and a lot of husks of palm<note>–tree branches. KG</note> etc. Found wristwatch lost since day before yesterday at foot of <rs type="place" ref="ref:Cal01">cala</rs>–rock where I <add hand="ref:h_RG" place="supralinear">had</add>had a tussle with Solomon<note>Graves' dog. eds</note> who again would not come up rock because I was not dressed.

                  </choice></rs> &amp; I sitting opposite each other. Other changes, which sent a plate over to <rs type="place" ref="ref:Can15">Can Torrent</rs> &amp; fixed the inlaid table in the screen corner.</p>

            <p> No sea today.             <p> Planted dahlias with <rs type="person" ref="ref:Se1">Sebastian</rs>.</p>
            <p> Made blackberry &amp; apple jelly: in the middle <rs type="person" ref="ref:LR1">Laura</rs> wanted to read out her contingent will instructions to executors. <unclear reason="crossed out"/> We worked on these until 2 a.m. In the middle I tried to squeeze the juice through a cloth but it went wrong &amp; I made a lot of mess, &amp; waste.</p>
            <p> I got supper, made ice, cleared away. <rs type="person" ref="ref:LR1">Laura</rs> kept <rs type="person" ref="ref:KG1">Karl</rs> employed for several hours.</p>

               <rs type="person" ref="ref:Jo4">Josefa</rs> told me that it was the 9<hi rend="vertical-align: super;">th</hi> of the month — from <del>Laura's</del>

Gallardo's very cowardly wouldn't face horses: took a long time to kill: <del hand="ref:h_RG">second</del> remainder better but the <foreign>matadors</foreign> though hardworking &amp; going through all the motions didn't appeal. Noain got ears. Gallardo goodish in second bull but took four shots at the <foreign>

Century horsemen with candles in cupped sticks resting on their stirrups, red-coated guards &amp; an illuminated <add hand="ref:h_RG" place="supralinear">Catalina</add><note>

            <p> Dream about strange hall of a house in 1900-ish London: over the door a faded print called <q>In the Gay Old Days. The Duke of Westminster celebrates his Coming of Age in the Company of 10,000 Ladies of the Town.</q>  The D. of W, a long-faced fair-haired young man in evening dress, elbows on knees staring greedily forward: in the middle of an auditorium full of girls with doll faces and wasp-waists.</p>
            <p> Girls boiled up the blackberry &amp; apple jelly which I poured out &amp; sealed: it made 12 small pots, very stiff. <foreign>Algarrobas</foreign><note>St. John's bread. KG; carob bean, locust bean. WG</note> falling.</p>

Afternoon, sea: buried stinking corpse of a kid <add hand="ref:h_RG" place="supralinear">on foreshore,</add>in company with the Staff-Colonel staying at <rs type="place" ref="ref:Son07">Son Bauza</rs>, who was grateful on account of his wife &amp; children with him. <rs type="person" ref="ref:LR1">Laura</rs> going over <bibl><rs type="cita" ref="ref:Fan"><hi rend="text-decoration: underline;">Fantasia</hi></rs></bibl> &amp; writing a letter to <rs type="organization" ref="ref:Co2">Constable</rs> about business names<note>for <rs type="organization" ref="ref:SP1">Seizin Press</rs>. KG</note>. We went through Documents. New arrangement made for files. I wrote to <rs type="person" ref="ref:El1">Eliot</rs> asking him to approve Wills of both &amp; return; to <rs type="person" ref="ref:Pi1">Pinker</rs> asking <rs type="organization" ref="ref:Ho1">Hogarth Press</rs>'s profit-sharing scheme, what percentage; to <rs type="organization" ref="ref:WB2">Westminster</rs> enclosing our joint-account application.</p>
            <p> For second time running got salt-water into the ice<note>ice cream. KG</note>. Finished going over <rs type="person" ref="ref:FR2">Richards</rs> manuscript so far as he sent it. <rs type="person" ref="ref:JM1">Gelat</rs> came &amp; told us about enquiries he made about the spy, whom the Police know nothing about, may be a Private Cop. Also about Pedro &amp; his shameless brother in law<note>?? eds.</note> &amp; political moves now taken to settle water dispute.

               </add>. Third child this year to lose an eye (11 years, 11 years, 5 years — detonator, stone thrown, ball on elastic.)</p>

I cross–copied <bibl><rs type="cita" ref="ref:Fan">Fantasia</rs></bibl>, 2 copies (3 hours). One copy to <rs type="person" ref="ref:JA1">John <supplied>Aldridge</supplied></rs>.

KG</note> grass &amp; set fire to an olive tree: he didn't think it would burn but it was one of the twisted sort &amp; had a central flue and there was no earth so no chance of quenching the flames. A number of seedling pines which <rs type="person" ref="ref:JM1">Gelat</rs> says he will <del>let grow</del>
               <add hand="ref:h_RG" place="supralinear">train</add> up for the looks. The top olive trees only useful for firewood. It made a nice torch at night.</p>
