Finished A.F.T. Almost Forgotten Times Chapter XXXV. Started A.F.T. Chapter XXXVI. Went round garden with Laura deciding on whereabouts of plants & bushes. Took a cutting of the yellow & green leafed bush which Joän gave us.

To sea. Isabel M. wired about her going to New York on the 18th. Richards returned second batchfor Old Soldier Sahib eds & sent corrections, which I gave Karl to type after I had gone over them.

Letters to Morley asking for return of first batch, to Richards acknowledging, to Sanders paying a/c.

Heavy weather, distant lightning but no rain. To village with L Laura & Magd. Magdalena

Marcus Bernardo Colom's son WG has disgustostrouble. KG with the orchestra it seems.

Oct 2 Wednesday.

Gas drum changed.

Incorporated OSS Old Soldier Sahib corrections. Gelat came, & talked for 2 hours about things — removal of olive trees, Valldemossa electric scheme (but not until everything is settled about hours of water), the Sala café & the importance of keeping it under our control.

AliceLaura's cat eds brought her many 3 of her four kittens to Canellun (drain-pipe). Pepe came & Gelat, he & we worked out position of new casitashed. KG at Can Torrent.

Two men now working at the fuentespring (above Can Torrent) KG in search of water for the house: went there with Gelat. Very little water is needed for the garden, & since this is October in a dry year if water is found it is likely to last all the year round. To Margarita to try on my coat after many months; heard wireless news of invasion of Abyssinia by the Italians & of a possible Anglo-French naval rapprochment rapprochement: combination of forces? eds.

Finished A.F.T. Almost Forgotten Times Chapter XXXVI & started A.F.T. Chapter XXXVII. To Café where failed to get DaventryIs Graves referring to Daventry the town in the English Midlands as a source of BBC broadcasts? WG/eds news but played Parchesi with Juan & Modern Girl & A.N.OTHER & won.

Oct 3 Thursday.

Finished A.F.T. Almost Forgotten Times Chapter XXXVII began A.F.T. Chapter XXXVIII. Antonio the guitarrist & Ant Antonio the Murcian trying out the spring, but short of pulling down the wall can only find a trickle of 10-15 litres an hour.

Today the Judge came on his inspection:concerning the water rights controversy? eds Gelat arranged that neither of the lawyers should come out with him, and that the news of his coming should not be given out until 1 o'clock when it would be impossible to send a wire to Deyá, so that only Gelat himself was there when the Judge turned up. A very windy day.

Morley sent an agreement for O.S.S. Old Soldier Sahib (doesn't like the title but hasn't a better) for me to approve for Richards. Sent back for alteration of translation-rights commission (33 1/3% was too high) & ditto serialization rights, & omission (on the other hand) of a cheap edition clause. Wrote to Richards about this.

Finished A.F.T. Almost Forgotten Times Chapter XXXVIII. Only one left now. Amador getting green olives for salting. Told of first fighting in Abyssinia.

Finished A.F.T. Chapter XXXIX which is the last of the book: Karl has still 11 sheets to type.

Gelat came with Solomon'sGraves' dog's. eds kennel & Miguel creosoted it. Gelat & I went up to view the spring: no good: went higher & found quite a good one — perhaps 30 or 50 litres an hour, more by searching. Settled accounts with him, including carpenter's bill. He had mended the donkey carreton.cart. KG Went with him in afternoon to Can Medó for apples, grapes & beans. To Posada: well nearly done.

Laura dissatisfied with Magdalena who finds life lonely: & Isabel's careful touch is missed. (Gelat spoke to her.) To village: heard wireless news of Adowa advance.

Went over A.F.T. Almost Forgotten Times Chapter XXXII to end; Karl having typed so far now. Wrote declining to send handwriting specimen to Sunday Times Book Exh. Exhibition Laura in last stages of her Decline of Prophecy struggle.

Sebastian transplanted Sweet Williams. Rosa brought my pink silk shirt. Hair cut. Tried on hand-made coat with Rosa.

Went over some pp pages of Richards. Old Soldier Sahib. eds Posada well done, except for a small 10-minute job which Matias will do tomorrow. At Fábrica heard Medora's dos alegriasdouble joys. KG: her daughter comes tomorrow & Gelat has gainedfrom ganada: won. KG his case, with costs: but this is not official until Monday.

James Reeves book specimen came finally: appears all right after all.

Magdalena sad, so Laura glad to let her go. I cooked Sunday round of beef. (Sabater sent proofs — 1 sheet short & a glaring new misprint.

Ana & Juan & Juanita came: Gelat advised neutrality during their stay.Ana/Anita, Gelat's daughter from Rennes, was married to the Médico's brother — hence the warning. KG Brought Laura a mackintosh.

Went to see Francisquito's mother, promised Fr. Francisquito a present tomorrow.

Turbines again.

Went to Palma, dropping Magdalena at Valldemossa, who left without a proper goodbye & 1/2 a month's pay — having at the last moment repented & blamed it on a cold — but no!

Raining hard, but later cleared up. Cashed pension cheque rapidly (because of the rain) & also got 26% (375 p pesetas ) from Credito Balearthe(bankrupt)Bank. KG & a certificate about the rest. Bought a coral necklace for Laura to make up for one given to Isabel. Silk stuff for blue shirt. Various old cotton handkerchiefs at Margaritas & two blue plates horse & flowers; & peasant woman & salmonetes. Decided against dragon picture. Laura found a decent umbrella shop at last in the Jaime IIa street in Palma, possibly named after Jaume II, who ruled an independent Mallorca in the 13th century. eds. Bought Karl a hat. Laura got a pair of pig-skin shoes, cheap — made to measure by a foreign woman & then abandoned.

Official 'fallo'verdict. KG of water-case. Visit to Schw. Schwarz and Str Strenge 's new flat by the Taberna VascaBasque Tavern? eds. He gave Laura a beautiful emerald-matrix silver-gilt ring, in an old shagreen ring-box. Sabater gentle and offered to reprint first page with corrections: L. offered to share the expense. He will send the stuff off to Constables. Bought blue filing cases.

Talk of getting a Jewish girl, whom Karl knows, a Hitler victim, to work: but later decided against possible complications after an illuminating talk.

Horace Walpole's Anecdotes of Painting came. Planted grey-green cuttings along depositoreservoir. KG side. Laura slowly at Troy.

In evening Laura went to bed & Karl & she & I played 66German card-game — a kind of whist or pinochlo, with loose rules. KG with her: she won, 8 games in a row, Karl hardly a point, me forging ahead. When she & I played alone I won 8 in a row & then lost one & then won. The streaks of luck were not easy to account for.

Problem of cats: 3 grown kittens wild — too many.

O.S.S. Old Soldier Sahib is now complete up to date in both copies — about 60,000 words.

Wire from Constable about giving Mss manuscripts to Beck to print. Laura replied.

Men came to fix the stone tables: Gelat is waiting until Castañer's departure before he gives us the good ones: the ones we have are only cement. Went to village, met Gelat in the Clot gathering apples near Peñaranda'sa doctor friend of Dr Antonio Vives. WG house. Best I have tasted in Mallorca. Cleaned my glass pebbles. Planted stock seeds. Men put up two table columnascolumns. KG.

Sun & showers and a rainbow exactly across the sea. Gelat brought apples.

Turbine lighting very bad. Juan traced it to some electrical burden put on the line by the millonario. When that was removed all was well. Parchesi with Gelat, L, & Magdalena. Ate sardines & sobrasadaMajorcan sausage. KG at the old café. Margarita wanted to know if I was still angry. Was.

Later went to ask G. if there was anything on his mind. Laura & I thought there might be about I & J? KG talking in the café. There wasn't. Wrote to Hillgarth about the Dia Palma's daily newspaper. KG and its anti-English English page.

To village for cigarettes: visited Posada where water now in well. Syringa in bud: took cuttings. Went over garden with Laura: we decided on new crescent bed. Planted cuttings of yellow creeper, & of wall flowers snapdragons.

Two more drafts of Moments in NeverSee June 12-13. eds: now called Proofs of Royalty & then Laura went over it with me.

Letter from Barker, satisfactory: mentioned Penguin (6d) Books project: I said I would agree if he wanted his £100 returned, but preferred him to do it at 2/- or 2/6'two shillings or two shillings, sixpence' eds. Money has reached him from Germany £40-£50. Telegram to Sabater. Morley wrote including Private of Buffs? Written by Frank Richards, RG, or ? Not identified. eds poem: & saying that people were coming round to O.S.S. Old Soldier Sahib title, but Faber wanted it merely S.S. Soldier Sahib

Cooked Sunday joint: read Epilogue proofs all day; a difficult job finding original French quotations. Rain. Big hot bath.

Only distraction in day visit to Can Medo where Gelat was instructing 'Sebastian aquel' in water control, & cards in evening.

Miguel the Carpenter brought his bill: 747.20pesetas (pts.) eds.. The little round moreymulberry. KG table cost only 25pts. & the oval one 35pts. This bill included window netting, all doors & windows at Posada, two doors here.

Gelat turned up: has every confidence in winning case & has right of appeal, which other side haven't. Is going to raise Can Madó depositowater tank. KG by 1 metre. Talked with boss of doctors' union about getting in a rival into in competition with the Dr Doctor : & with Mayor of Valldemossa, trouble there too.

Epilogue finished and sent off. End of a 4-5 years job. Faber & Faber agree to alterations in O.S.S. Old Soldier Sahib contract.

Juan Vives ill in bed with rheumatic feet from getting feet wet, when fishing. Prescribed rhus tox 3homoeopathic medicine. KG 2 hourly from Prescriberhomoeopathic "Doctor in the House." KG & why hadn't he replied to telegrams etc. He cried. I left without goodbye. Bought gold chain & green glass set in gold pendant 70 pts. At Casas bought set of six Columbus pictures for 55pts. for Sala; & mirror with wooden inlay for 20 pts. two Aragonese brown lustre with blue jugs for 10pts. the pair. & vellum notebook (nothing). (1792.) Got recipe for Yorkshire pudding from Short & he will send out a maid on spec. tomorrow who had been 10 years with English oldman, who died. From Malaga.a city in Andalucia, on the southern coast of Spain. eds Steak & kidney pudding at Lena's. Laura got yards of handmadelace at 30 c centimos a year yard? & stuff for red wool lazy-dress. Also red damask curtains for Sala. (Juan Vives better for his pills). Bought filing cases (15pts.) Also two silver rings & scarf pin: & blue earrings for Ana.

Put new paper in vellum notebook.

Sent bull-advertisement (Belmonte) to Sala (where pictures greatly appreciated) & took wire to village telling Beck to get on with things. Médico approached Gelat through Juan Moli's wife & Juan Vives suggesting an arregloarrangement. KG. Gelat replied he did not propose to talk to Médico, but his offer held to give the people water who had a right to it if they told what hours they wanted. Black & white wing feather of hoopoe: gift of Juan Vives.

Got down blankets & other winter things from attic. Letter from David giving sensible reasons for wanting to go to Cambridge: Oxford depressed him. Replied O.K. Application from A.A.Simpson Poems publishable?: replied discouragingly. Decent letter from Michael Roberts: replied. And from Arnie Lawrence: thanking for information about books: replied suggesting Mynotz HagenCol. Richard Meinertzhagen, O.C. Field Intelligence Section of Allenby's Middle East Army[?] According to K.G., he was "a T.E.L[awrence]-like character." For T.E. Lawrence film? KG/eds. Began long letter of protest to Left Review.

In evening we worked out 66card game. KG to exhaustion point. Laura got a 'Tailor'equivalent of a 'birdie' in golf. KG & Karl is owed 6 pes pesetas 60centimos in presents.

Maria Luna came for interview: seems all right, only too talkative, a little & too knowing, a little.

Dug up no-me-veras-sin-sols you won't see me without the sun (yellow flowers in border)KG & transplanted them across the path, with Karl's help. Also got sand to mix with the earth, for tulips.

The old woman of Calabat came in sight with a sister & the Papa. Yesterday the Papa & the Médico were hanging about the Calabat side of Canellun & their idea is to buy the terraces, we think, & plague us into rebuying them. Gelat will get hold of the son-in-law. (Tried tonight)

Schwartz came to the Sala: did not like the noise of the radio, otherwise all right.

Tired by digging & went to bed, trying to get Address to Customers right.

Rosa came: with new linen trousers for me & the collarless jacket with, red & blue, from an old skirt of handwoven cotton.

Worked all morning on final Claudius corrections mostly will & shall, should & wood would — also Vesuvius, aconite, Cymbeline, Aramaic & similar points. Laura wrote to Beck.

All afternoon planting tulips (leaf mould, sand, ordinary earth) some (Clusiana) 6 inches deep (Kauffmannia) 4, others 3-4. Gave 8 to the Str. Strenge & Schw. Schwarz Worked without a shirt.

Seeds coming up: Scabious, poppy, Af Marigold, Madora's flower & godetia.

Sent off corrections to A.B. Arthur Barker — 5 pp pages of corrections. To A.G. Amy Graves enclosing D David 's letter & offering to pay N.N. Nancy Nicholson for Sam's specialist.

Strenge & Schw. Schwarz at Sala, where pictures now were hung up, also red drop curtain for stage. G. Gelat has first option on Calabat (and from the son-in-law.)

Catalina roast-beefed us, & later we had a hot bath.

Reworked Address to Customers, now called Receipt for Moneys; & if Laura approves recent reworking etc now have 15 poems.

Cooked lunch. Laura working on Schools. Answered W.B.Yeats' anthology request for: Pure Death, Land of Whipperginny, Dialecticians, Landscape, & his threat to come to Mallorca this year.

Dark drizzly day. Potted out two pinks, Can Massiana flower, & two bulbs unknown.

Laura wrote to Norman

Went to Costa D'or Hotel & had fish & pork: overcharged as usual. (Heavy rain) Played 66a card game. KG there

The day Maria Luna came to us.

Work Got up at 6 & went to village to order things. Then worked all day on A.F.G. Almost Forgotten Germany (200 pages). Raining.

Went to Salerosa, borrowing pinks and also wall-flower seedlings, put them in at the Posada (syringa in bloom there), where the water was up to the first join. Cutting of jasmine, or is it plumbago, from Can Bi.

Nothing from Sabater. Gelat spoke to him seriously.

'Our corner' at the Sala cleared of extra chairs.

The new woman Anatolia gave us good soup & grilled peppers without their peel.

Cold, cold weather. Corduroys & heavy socks. Up early & taught M Anatolia to get breakfast.

Men working on Casitashed. KG; making a bridge, too.

To Posada: planted violets, freezias, red geranium creeper, stuff from the tuneltunnel. eds, nasturtiums, ancharisa, passion flower. Water steady in well. Also marigolds.

Excellent meal, from customary ingredients.

Wrote to Honor, Hillgarth.

O.S.S. Old Soldier Sahib has been accepted as the title: entries about dum-dum bullets & the Drunken Private's name & regimental number.

Laura cleared out my folders for me.

Aqueducts book came: thanked. Laura finished introduction to Schools: I read it over then.

More money from Germany £73 odd in all. From H.S. Harrison Smith sending O.S.S. Old Soldier Sahib advance, asking about Fool of RomeKG identifies this title as the film script. Could RG have referred to the screenplay for I, Claudius under the same title as the condensed novel? eds Replied must first write to Korda. (Did so.)

Took down Obras Publicas[Ministry of] Public Works. KG: put up Laura's story

Anatolia finds work too hard, but likes us. Her cooking justifies getting other help.

To Posada, watered the flowers, recovered S Salamo 's lead. Gelat took better. Juan & J.Vives shot 3 rabbits, driving in car between olives at Valldemossa, chasing the rabbits with headlights. Gave us one.

Took Sallycast-iron. KG stove to Can Torrent: Laura nearly decided to leave Troystudy[?] at Can Torrent. KG: then changed.

Put lock on Anatolia's door.in Can Torrent. KG

Laura dreadfully tired from housework, clearing out cellars etc.

Much warmer.

Casitashed. KG half-risen: preparations for blasting rocks in the orchard. Karl 'muffish' so strangeness all day. He told me finally that he had had a headache all day & eaten nothing. Went over Schools introductionwith L Laura . Kept Sallycast-iron stove. KG going all day for Laura: who wrote a long letter to James.

All afternoon gardening — making a long row of St Brigid's anemones in properly prepared earth: hitherto all clay in that front part of the flower-bed. Transcopied Schools. The inlaid mirror came: hung up in Mesquida; also shaving mirror for Karl.

Catalina came: & Anatolia, keeping in the kitchen did her stuff.

To Palma Laura decided to go to Palma to get maids. (At 2 o'clock)to Short & various places in El Terreno. Gelat did most of the work.Bought glass fruit plates, tablecloths, rings for Magdalena & Anitabut might be referring to Ana, Gelat's daughter, here. eds, needles etc; ordered candle-greaseprotectors of. KG coppers, silver button-brooch for Laura's Ibiza jacket. A tortoise stoveWith tortoise-shaped doors for front-loading the wood. It remained in the Canellun dining room after the war until the fireplace was rebuilt in 1957. WG for me.
