Also old bottle for Can Torrent, 2 pes. pesetas Two pictures Pharos & Colossus of Rhodes 18 pes. pesetas Fetched oval magenta & gold mirror, the pink rings, & candle-grease protectors 2 apiece. Two silver paste buttons 2.50pts. each for L Laura 's brocade jacket. Silver button brooch from Pomar. L Laura bought black suede purse, removed brass chain & put on silver one. (10 pes pesetas ).

Natural Need printed will go off Monday. Lost 450 pesetas: found again on Dulan counter.

Short to whom gave two books said Maria Luna's new mistress as mad as she. Pomar said M.L. Maria Luna 's gift would come 'from any merceria'button-shop. KG

James

After a bad night Laura went off, at 5.30 to Palma to fetch James. I stayed behind & saw to things — joint, flowers dusting etc in now reorganised house. James L Laura & I talked all morning. He has little room at Can Torrent, with Old Troythe entrada (entrance hall) at Can Torrent: "New Troy" became "Old Troy" when JR arrived. KG as workroom. In afternoon a walk to Lluchalcari & back, on to Sala, where James introduced.

Hot weather.

Barley planted a week ago on Luna land, coming up.

Richards sent the rest of his stuff.

The new maids went to the Dance.

American royalties came.

A little work on Lars Porsena.

Talked till 12.

Laura sleepless, she says. I slept till 10.

Up at 10.30.

A few letters: Richards, H.S. Harrison Smith etc. Talk again. Laura not working yet. Went walk to Cala with James & round by Llucalcari.

Epilogue telegram to Constable about paper boards, rounded back.

Long time in Sala. Dull day.

Sewing machine came (price?) & Sally stove, price 125 pes pesetas .

Very hot still.

Talked late: about Communism etc.

Laura from 9 – 1 at JuzgadoLaw Courts. KG. All right.

Bought typewriter. Fox portable for 150 pes pesetas . Blue plate 2.30pts. Glass bottles 8 pes pesetas at Casas, fetched the 2 Wonders of World pictures.

20 pes pesetas to Catalina Roca whose 2 sons had been shot in Cuba & property seized: only 10 pts. a w month from daughter there.

Bought 2 baskets 1.75pts. each. Repaid K. Karl 850 pes pesetas .

Back by La Granja (Esporlas) where Gelat viewed an electric saw.

To Palma by camiónbus. KG, (Karl & I). It hadn't rained there: rained here all day. Buying household things: also 2 handkerchiefs for Laura & new (5) records: 2 Duke Ellington, 1 Louis Armstrong, 1 Jack Hilton & Niña de la Puebla: flamenco.

JuzgadoLaw Court. KG: interpreter who could not talk English, because the JuezJudge. KG considered it part of his dignity not to conduct conversations directly with me in Spanish. Questioned me about road. Answered same as Laura, but added that G. Gelat had undertaken not to build a house opposite at Se Semente de Ca'n Carindo, es sementé de Can Carindo: a plot of land belonging to Can Carindo. WG (insisted it was Cementerioa cemetary? eds) to preserve our tranquilidadquiet. KG.

Saw Czechoslovakian translator in Lena's Bar: explained lay-out to her.

Laura worried when I came home — NicholasLR's tom-cat. KG has been very ill, SolomonRG's dog. eds had been sick, too & AliceLR's cat. KG had messed the passage & a kitten Catalina's bed. (Nicholas, whiskied, improved)

Registered passports with the Valldemossa caboof the Civil Guards. KG at the AlcaldiaTown Hall. KG. Then to Soller, lunch at the Costa Brava, waited about in café while Gelat saw S Señor the Proprietor. KG de Sa Pedrissa's brother: S Señor de P is withdrawing from the junta. Another arregloarrangement, deal. KG had been offered that G Gelat should work his turbines how he liked but not canalyze water.

Letter from Honor about having got cottage etc. Gordon off for 6 months.

Worked late on Lars Porsena, Laura on a poem. Talk about physical contacts as index of character.

Gelat's story about his ugly black mule that once for a bet he trotted from Palma to Deya (27 kilometres) in 1 hr 20 minutes. 50,000 pes pesetas in bets on it: no work at Valldemossa or Deya that day. Mule did not sweat a hair

Went over last chapter but two of O.S.S. Old Soldier Sahib Did a number of pp pages of Lars Porsena. Much rain in the night. Laura still hung up by poem, unable to think of proofs. Wrote to A.G. Amy Graves & to Liddell Hart, explaining things.

These last days have only had fires in the evening.

Wedding of Catalina Martina's?? eds son to comadre'smid-wife's. KG daughter in Clot.

Letter from Liddell Hart, saying that Arnie had agreed to book suggested. Working over proofs of Mistake Somewhere with Laura: got it off.

Sore throat & chill. Went over last chapter of but one of O.S.S. Old Soldier Sahib , typed by Karl. Laura still on poem.

Present of jug from Inca, from Gelat & turronsalmond confection for Christmas. KG: & my silver necklace, mended, for Laura.

Nov 15 Friday.

Went over last chapter of O.S.S. Old Soldier Sahib & gave Karl Lars P. Lars Porsena to type.

CasitaShed. KG getting a cement roof & floor.

Had to go to Soller to fetch proofs of Moon's No Fool from customs. Lift from Hotel manager who identified me. In café an English woman & man: she talking about importance of children specializing — 'like Shirley Temple you know! If you can sing & dance you can always earn a living.' Of me — I was wearing green baize waistcoat with silver buttons: typical German.

Proofs of Moon's No Fool. Laura & Karl James went to Costa D'Or to order dinner for tomorrow.

Moon's No Fool: also helping to try tidy Laura's accumulated untidied-away things. Laura finished poem How Love Becomes Wordsbecame "When Love Becomes Words" eds. at last — about 200 lines. Then hurriedly went over proofs with me.

Catal Margarita went for her monthly holiday this morning.

Sent proofs off.

To Hotel Costa D'Or for supper: Gelat, Medora, Laura, Karl, James, me, Anna & Juan Vives. A lot of champagne: then 7 1/2 (Gelat winning) & then dancing when they had gone till 12 2 o'clock. Then kippers & tea (Sherry & brandy after champagne)

Up late: mostly housework.

Looked over T.E. T.E. Lawrence stuffi.e. material--letters etc.--for prospective book, later titled T.E. Lawrence to His Biographer. eds generally.

Very fine weather.

Retidying Laura's disconsolate room.

In afternoon to Lluchalcari: saw Joän Junyer's pictures, green girl, red-horse, the triple sequence of women & two children, etc. Bought Montuiri devilsdancers. KG etc. Bought Pollensa hobby horse picture. Price not fixed.

Valldemossa medicodoctor. KG's English-speaking nephew came back with us to supper. G Gelat told us aside that he was a vividorsponger. KG; he offered to teach us the parado Parado de Valldemossa: a folk-dance. KG.

Trying to find a word for Laura's poems so bath delayed till 12 midnight.

To Liddell Hart about T.E. book T.E. Lawrence to His Biographer was a collection of T.E. Lawrence's letters to RG, which RG edited, with a critical commentary. Published in conjunction with Liddell Hart's collection, which carried the same title. eds a long letter. Also J. Cape. Also printers about Thomas Matthews. Read Laura's letter. Sorted T.E. stuffletters etc. for the book eds ready to start.

In afternoon walk with James over stepping stones — Son Bauza, back by Clot.

Went over Karl's typescript of 8000 words of Lars Porsena.

Laura, another session with her poem: & went over James's. Curious dream encounter with stranger.

Did first few pp pages of T.E.book: would become T.E. Lawrence to His Biographer eds Also all but last three pp pages of Lars Porsena typescript.

Joän Junyer came. Price for hobby horsespainting. KG 750pts. & for Montuiri devilsdevil-dancer painting. KG which also we bought 400 pes pesetas (he asked 500 & 300 the asking price was 800 pesetas (pts.), not 300, according to KG. eds).

Laura finally finally finished poem & wrote 8 line Wishing poem in bed in morning.

Silly letter from Christine? & dishonest one from RichardKG says this is Frank Richards? eds, asking to hold up book & enlarge it. Laura wired: commercially impossible postpone publication objections unfounded dont worry love writing. & then wrote — which wasted her afternoon & James's: who also wrote to Honor.

Present of 4 thrush from Juan Vives. ProcesoCourt case. KG position still unclear.

My wound ached: suggesting wind rain which came. T.E. again — up to page 16. James writing novel, Laura going over Schools & wis adding to Wishing more Dear poem.

To Lluchalcari: paid dinner — 108 pesetas. Mcthe Cormacks wrote they are coming. Laura & James going over New Verse address list, with many jokes.

Late, Laura went over programme of writings & publishings with me.

She dreamed of Solomon & a Lion Man in garden.

Letter from A.L. Arnie Lawrence about tracing books. Would I write for Lies About Lawrence? Could this be for Arnie Lawrence, ed. T.E. Lawrence by his Friends. London: Jonathon Cape, 1937.? eds.. Said I would.

Gelat visited us in morning — further chapter about water. The S. of P. Señor of Sa Pedrissa has quarrelled with the Soller judge, to whom he had promised to an arreglodeal. KG on condition that no demandademand. KG was made on him. Gelat told us of a long interview with Juan of Moli: explained to whom him that medico would lose 1500 pts. a year which he was getting, not entitled to. Apparently the Chief of Doctors' Association has told the D r not to meddle with foreigners. (This comes from JuzgadoLaw Courts. KG colonel-judge, who is president of Fomento de Turismolocal tourist board. KG).

Dentist (20 pes pesetas ) Then bought at Casas butter dish, bottle, & James some door-lock-frames. At Pomar's a pendant in blue enamel, square, for Laura 37 pes pesetas . & at Einstein's she found a silver-gilt Trojan looking necklace for 70 pes pesetas . Buttons for James's sisters in Ghetto (enamel ones at 3 pes pesetas & frame).

At dentist began a Christmas poem. Laura a lipstick — first for years she has found that suited.

Letter to Sunday Times protesting against Hutchinson'spublishers. KG advertising mention of the Claudius I,Claudius and Claudius the God. eds books.

Sat up late talking about children's poems, & whether.

(Tried to buy James a ring, but he resisted)

Juan Vives & Ana went off.

Richards sent answers to last questions, & a photograph.

James is to have Can Gelat , like Honor with Posada.

Did a great deal more T.E. — up to his entering the R.A.F. in 1925. (Letter from Jonathan, suggesting terms 20% on book, £300 advance — to be split between L.H. Liddell Hart & me.) Walk with Karl along coast.

Finished the O.S.S. Old Soldier Sahib stuff, for Karl to type.

James had a headache which did not yield until about 11. He had done his Xmas poem up to 2.30 last night.

Str. Strenge & Schw Schwarz to tea at Canellun.

Gave G. Gelat 1000 pts. more for cottage. Can Gelat in Viña Vieja. KG

Have had a recurrent sore (evening) throat for the last few days.

First day of course:treatment prescribed by Dr. Rovira? See Nov. 26th. eds felt rather sick in consequence.

Wire from Liddellhart that he is putting matter into Watt's hands. Wrote to him.

T.E. all day.

In evening went to Palma, supper at Lena's bar: my watch to be mended at Rel. Espagnol Relojeria Española watchmaker's. KG. Offered cheque for ring. No soy estoy accostumbrado. I'm not accustomed. KG Tiene de romper este costumbre malo. Break this bad custom. KG Mañana. Tomorrow. KG No estare aqui mañana. Won't be here tomorrow. KG No sale.

Late home after a nice time at Macarena's & first film for two years (news reel chiefly) while waiting for M to open.

Nov 30 Saturday

T.E. again. Going quickly. And letter to Jenny congratulating & sending £5 : and to A.G. Amy Graves saying that can't supply her with German marks.

In evening Ran down the road to torrent & up by Bujosa with S. Salamo

Scandal at Can La : Bartolomé the mason's wife attacked his sister who came home from France expecting to live with them. Father has also been rejected. Wife (Italian) tore off sister's earrings, & scratched her throat. Bartolomé then flung her donwstairs. Painful impression in village.

Punch & sandwiches at Can Caballo. Then dancing here till a late hour.
