Helped Bartolome and Antonio the Murcian to put large stone table in position. They had already fixed the one in the grotto. The centres joining the stones to the pillars are made of Portland cement mixed with water paint — red, green, blue.

Olive tree nearest the flower-bed being cut down by the two Sebastians Sebastian Aquel and old Sebastian? eds., Gelat supervising.

June 3 Wednesday.

Laura having finished 3 sections of Troy read it to me all morning. Then in afternoon worked on Drama for Epilogue (Alan Hodge). Heavy day. Laura condemned the middle olive on the drive. Gave Madora 200 p pesetas . for Magdalena's wedding present. She gave us cuttings of Allegria in Casa alegria en casa a plant name. Went with Gelat for walk to Vinyet which was being ploughed by a white-faced mule with a red nose-band. SolomonGraves' dog eds. thought this was blood & got very excited.

24 hour strike in Palma as protest against bombing of trades-union headquarters (nine injured). So no letters.

Bartolome has finished path, is building seat beside it.

Watered plants at the Posada, which have taken well.

Rewrote first page of Antigua for the third or fourth time.

June 6 Saturday

Bartolomé making a bench with stones from the Can Mado oven. News came at 11 of the death of his aunt by cancer (Francisco the carpenter's wife) so he knocked off. Went to Margarita for my new trousers: not started, of course.

Miguel brought framed picture of Toledo: & round table to Posada.

Wrote four pages for Laura about Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripidesfor Drama eds..

Still cold weather, no need for mosquito netting yet. One pear tree has only just begun to leaf.

Flowers put in a week ago have all taken well. AbelinsAbelens K.G. are leaving Deyá.

Had 'stosia' dreamseems to be a made up word – p. 306 Antigua – for these flowers (which for some reason or other, he calls "stosias" – we suppose they have to be called something) K.G..

June 7 Sunday.

Incorporated 'stosia' dream in Antigua.

To Palma for bull-fight at 11.30

It should have been Lalanda, Armillita, Ortega; but Lalanda had sprained his ankle in a bull fight in France, and Armillita is a Mexican and the Mexican bullfighting dispute is still unsettled, so we had Curro Caro and Pericas. Curro Caro was brave but nervous and the bulls were very large and to be nervous about. Pericas's first visit to Mallorca Palma (his native city) as a matador so he had stage fright and was knocked down by his first bull not gored and lost consciousness until after the fight. Ortega was better than ever and from our good seats (17 pesetas) we could see him close and hear him talking to the bull. Curro Caro threatened, Ortega commanded. Mira me, toro! Look at me, bull! K.G. and when he had him in position told him to wait a moment while he killed him. Ortega got ears and tail for Perica's bull, no other awards, though there was a protest that C.C. didn't get something for his last bull, which he killed well, taking advantage of his tallness.

We met in Palma the Tio's (Pedro & Catalina) Castañer & 4 nieces, and Barcelo's daughter and son-in-law.

Lena's was awful. Francisca stayed in Palma, the maestroschool-master K.G. returned with us.

Still making little checks in Antigua.

Spent whole morning in garden potting cuttings of white, and mauve-papery, carnations and various things Strenge sent us (she took carnation cuttings from us yesterday & two Cardoonsan edible perennial, closely related to globe artichoke eds.) – mixing various earths & juggling about the pots, making room. About 20 pots.

SmithBlacksmith K.G. came: gave instructions for the ancient iron balustrade between Canellun & Can Torrent and he and Gelat worked out how the front door balustrade should go.

The 'Proxies' (Macdonalds) are going, leaving a broken contract behind them: only paid 80 p pesetas . and baker spent 4000 p. pesetas on house.

Took out tulips, rearranged pots in patiocourt-yard K.G.. Bartolome continuing path in vermouth bed. Decided on a bench at narrow part of garden by carnations. Visit from Maria Fidevera and Juana, with eggs and cherries.

Politics and Poetry again

Bathed: it was not too cold, only rather.

Zinnias came in afternoon, planted by the media bota half-barrel K.G.

Laura I and Karl to Posada, hung up pictures etc, took notes of missing fittings. L approved garden and casitashed K.G. doings: and bench.

June 14th Sunday

Read a stack of Left Reviews and took notes for Poetry & Communism. Wrote it in afternoon.

Planted some hanging geraniums at the Posada.

It rained all the afternoon. 'Es Saltwaterfall – after strong rain K.G.' active but no 'Cueva NegraBlack Cave K.G.'.

Wrote Poetry and Communism all day and up to 10 o'clock at night.

Alicecat eds. brought her kitten up.

Absurd heavy drenching rain.

June 16 Tuesday.

Absurd drenching rain all night.

In morning Alicecat eds. who has had a war with SolomonGraves' dog eds. for months brought her kitten, drowned, into his kennel as if either to reproach him for being the cause of its having to be kept away from the house, or (more likely) to blame to make us think its death was due to his violence. He got greatly excited over the corpse but did not maul it. Alice is pregnant again, too.

The other side's lawyer has put in a sick-certificate at the trial today, to tide over the Boy trouble.

Unexpected £30 from Albatross and ditto ex gratia from Cape for L.&.A 2/- edition.

Wrote to Cape: about limited edition.

June 17 Wednesday.

A little sun, but clouded over again immediately. Men working again, removing top olive from drive and replanting it below, Bartolome making frame of cement to put a cover over the pit, & continuing shrubbery path.

Laura gave me job of going on with Schools by myself. Last night worked on Chinese, this morning on Indian school systems.

In evening Laura went over more Antigua with me, in afternoon we went over what I had written about Politics & Poetry and Gelat & Medora came & former explained danger Nuns are in of getting their school convent closed as well as school, because they have canvassed against the maestra school-mistress K.G. who is now turning nasty, though previously prepared to exchange. At Bañalbufar the people turned out to prevent inspector serving notice on nuns, & inspector to avoid bloodshed(Guardia CivilesCivil Guards K.G. were ready to fire) drove off.

June 18, Thursday

Changed £60 with Short (2000 pesetas. to Gelat) at 'black' rate of 37.50 pesetas.. Notarized my U.S. income tax claim & sent off. P.C. postcard to David, advising him & Sam to come on the 15th by the Scharnhorst ( S'hampton Southampton 11th).

Letter Bought net skirt for Laura 15 pes pesetas and at M.M's, L various cushion cover stuffs, also small amethyst and pearl pendant 12 p. pesetas ; at Casas keyhole for Posada, toccador tocador aldabais Spanish, tocador more Mallorcan: knocker K.G. for knocker, & old tile 1 p peseta in all, nothing else of interest.

On return, letter from Fuller returning missing ch. chapter of Antigua eds. and from Richards about Curzon & the Lancersrefers to O.S.S. or Old Soldiers Never Die eds.

June 19 Friday.

Working on 2nd trial and interlocutory injunction in Antigua, on India in Schools, with Laura on Politics & Poetry; went to Margarita, no trousers yet ready. Bartolome mending plaster at Canellun round doors, paths in shrubbery finished, pu making holes for putting bannisters on the steps in front of front door. Amador brought Can Mado earth to Posada. Sebastian Aquel made seed-bed with Emmi's seeds. In the evening a punch-bowl at Str & Sch. Laughed like anything over nothing. To bed at 10.30.

Found number of seedling lavender bushes and Garden daisy first out.

Working on Schools, India & Japan, and checking p & cross-copying 3 sections of Politics to send off today.

Watt unable to get an offer from Watt Rosenbach on T.E.L. letters K.G., trying Wells. Told him to accept Maggs', rather than nothing by delaying too long.

Ordered bl brown suit and two grey flannels from Allen, to be brought by David: cost £14.7. in all (suit £11.9, with discount)

Gelat reports that a meeting for an arreglodeal K.G. at 9 am summoned by the opposition lawyer & G's lawyer (Luis Alemany & Barcelo) was not attended owing to differences. The hearing is now on July 1st.

Worked on Moslem Schools .

Hair cut, ordered San JuanSaint John's day; midsummer village fiesta, or holiday. K.G., eds. cake, and ventilator for Can Torrent. To Fabrica to hear what news of last nights night's meeting about water (Don Pedro and Secretario brought offer to Gelat).

Apparently a surrender, but asked for too much water. Gelat scaled down six hours as a condition for signing. The Doctor was not at the meeting which appointed these emissaries and adopted these terms.

Gelat came with a long report. The Education committee referred the maestraschool-mistress K.G.'s complaint to the mayoralty, Gelat called a meeting of parents, one of whom (was prompted to) brought up question of her nationality – This was put in writing: if she consents to exchange she won't be turned out. If she doesn't she will.

The water thing is practically settled. Gelat has conditioned that a certain pipe be put at the fuentespring K.G. source to go down to the claimants. This leaves half the water to him, and he will divert the stream to the depositoresevoir K.G. which will always remain full: & he has hours free from 4 in the morning to 9 every day. The road business shelved, apparently to save the staff-colonel's face. The school may be built for nothing by applying for 5 units (3 schoolrooms, library, doctor's consulting room) at 12,000 pes. pesetas grant each.

Very hot day, but clear.

Small jobs on Antigua.

Catalina went early to Fabrica to help with the lunch.

Lunch at Fabrica. Present — Laura, me, Karl, Gelat, Madora, Anita, Juan, Magdalena, Francisquita. Don Pedro & Doña Catalina, Anita's Margarita & Francisca, her mother, her father and brother Antonio. Twelve at lunch, with six in kitchen including Catalina who made a toffee fruit-stand with candied cherries on top. Entremeseshors d'oeuvres K.G., arroz brutdirty rice K.G., with lobsters, saffron etc, chicken ragout, lobster mayonnaise salad, champagne, cake, fruit, coffee, cigars. Serenade by the Establiements band.

Returned to Canellun at 4 – stopped at Can Caballo for coffee – then to Plazavillage-square K.G. too late for bolerosSpanish dances eds. , , , back to supper on sopasMajorcan soup K.G. & chops at the Fabrica. Exhausted on return, though the weather was very good.

The greatest joke was all Gelat 's political enemies coming to congratulate him on his name day at the exquisitoexquisite K.G. lunch. He replied to 'Muchos años may you live many years! K.G.' — 'en su compania In your company! K.G.'.

June 25th Thursday

Hot.

To Can Gelat with Gelat & Pepe Salas: gave instructions for anti-damp-proofing, for kitchen & bathroom windows & shutters, ventilation in dispensalarder K.G., putting lavatory right, shutters in workroom.

Went over politics typing and sent off to Kemp, also letter to Constable about A.F.G. wrapper.

26 sacks of tobacco captured by coast guards near Lluchalcari. The two c.g. coast guards s will get about 6000 p pesetas . each — apart from what they may have to pay to the denouncer, possibly someone with a small stake in the tobacco.

Jenny wrote saying that 'Follow the Sun' C.B. Cochran's 1936 Revue Follow the Sun (music by Arthur Schwartz; lyrics by Howard Dietz & Desmond Carter) eds. comes off today & she wants to come here for a holiday. Wrote, welcoming her.

Got up at 5.30 to make sure Catalina went off. She was not there – Mass? WaiteShe appeared at the gate later, where I paid her, her 15 pes. pesetas owing, & saw her off in Bart's car. Spent morning (after a sleep) in cooking Sunday roast as it should be cooked with proper gravy, mintsauce etc.

In afternoon after watering at the Posada, where Karl & I took the picture lent us by Schwarz, entertained Pedro, Catalina & Madora. Then to village – ices – and gave Strenge the agate brooch at last ready (from Barcelona).

In evening Laura did one page of Antigua with me, grew tired, went to bed.
