July 2 Thursday. Alan came

To Palma at 7.30.

Met Alan at Alhambra. Dentist. Bought chest of drawers for Can Gelat – 75 pes pesetas . Stone lion plaque for Posada, 2 pes. (both at Casas). Otherwise bought only current household things: and 25 pts.'-worth of plants (peony, cana canna lily and a shrub forget what.) The agate brooches cost 25 pts. each to make.

At Canellun Amador brought Can Mado earth for near the pink bench, Bartolomé all but finished porchadaroof over kitchen door K.G..

Alan is with Karl at Can Torrent.

On return did Antigua with Laura. She came on a contradiction & we stopped.

Harold Cooke sent an Antigua 6d stamp with a postmark: & mentioned that 1d for was for island use only.

Went over various points in Politics Drama with Laura, then transcopied and pasted in insertions for Alan to read.

Laura is giving Alan 'Poets' (subject of knowledge) to get on with.

Catalina Martina cooking for us until Monday when a new cook Francisca of Pollenza comes.

Revised the Antigua mistake contradictions and made changes to correspond with Cooke's points.

Bathed with Carl & Alan.

Gelat's costs will amount to 4000 pts. pesetas of which 1600 is already paid.

Work on a difficult passage of Alan's drama notes over which L & I stuck last night, very tired, at 12 o clock.

Counting up Epilogue III find we have already 250 pp pages & more to come from Norman and Alan; possibly Tom.

At 3 o clock in the morning the light went on. We and distant thought nothing of it. But in morning Seb. & Juana the fishwife in tears. At 6 three planes came over Palma & are said to have dropped 3 bombs. But Palma was already half-deserted, the population streaming out to neighbouring villages. Many came to ask shelter in Deyá.

L. K. Alan and I did not work but sat outside Can Torrent to listen. after gramaphone & dancing. Karl & Alan gave me birthday presents – cigarettes, sweets a gum-pot. In the evening I went to the village: divided into 2 camps, the rights talking hard at Ayuntamientotown hall KG, the lefts silent outside the Sala.

July 24 Friday. My birthday.

Hot: slept without a sheet.

Everyone working normally. Impression is that the F Fascist 's will surrender, Mallorca being cut off from supplies & the soldiers not being with the F Fascist 's. Gelat came & gave his account of the D r episode. (He told the F Fascist 's when they asked for light and said that they might shoot one another. G. said Then don't shoot so much! )

Now it is said that the plane did not drop bombs but was fired at, the anti-aircraft shells falling one in the Captain General's house, one in a barracks, one in the Ramblaboulevard eds.. Sounds unlikely.

Apparently Mallorca is being left to fall by itself without bombardments, being lef cut off from the outside world. News of fall of Caspe and Albacete to Gov t Government . The F Fascist 's cannot hold out long, we think, with Air Force & Fleet against them. The Mallorca & Seville radio give no news at all. Dozens of cars leaving Palma.

A plane came over Palma at 12 and caused a panic but dropped no bombs & went on. Yesterday a plane is said to have dropped bombs on Inca, Manacor, Pollenza etc.

Woken at 6 by a plane that went over Palma. It (or another) returned at two o clock after flying over Soller. The One that flew over Inca yesterday dropped leaflets and squibsfireworks eds..

Nobody is allowed to talk in groups of three or more in public places, or to listen to neighbours' radios, or to circulate news unfavourable to the military. In the villages F Fascist 's are eating and drinking at expense of shops and hotels with at rifle's point, and black-and-tanning.

Tonight's Fabrica radio reported Government advances towards Cordoba, Vittoria, Saragossa. Madrid gave railway timetables (proving the opposition news to be lies). Palma reported bombarded. No car came to Deyá so it isn't known what happened.

July 27th Monday.

Pancho as volunteer has been sent to a barracks far from Palma where he only gets 15 centimos a day. Schools.

The 5 o'clock plane dropped no bombs. A bit is said to have been knocked off the cathedral and 6 killed & 20 injured in the morning. Others say 12 killed.

Bombs in Palma: five planes. The bombs are 'cannisters' like the sort the Germans used at Fricourt filled with scrap metal; great moral effect, kill many, do little harm to property. After nine o'clock all shops shut except chemists shops.

We have thought of leaving the island because of interrupted communications; decided to wait a week & get Troy & Epilogue done. Palma is a dangerous gauntlet to run.
