            <p>Then shopping: shirts from <rs type="organization" ref="ref:MS2">Marshall &amp; Snelgrove</rs>, <rs type="person" ref="ref:LR1">Laura</rs>'s shoes from <rs type="organization" ref="ref:Ra1">Rayne's</rs> and at Little Gallery a tea service 37/6, a patchwork quilt £5.5, 6 sherry glasses at 4/<note>shillings eds.</note> each, an ash chair 30/-, beads for <rs type="person" ref="ref:LR1">Laura</rs>.  <add hand="ref:h_RG" place="left margin">Met <rs type="person" ref="ref:St2">Sterling</rs> for the 3rd time near <rs type="place" ref="ref:NPl01">Nottingham Place</rs>.</add> Forgot to phone <rs type="person" ref="ref:KG1">Karl</rs> who got alarmed: with him down <rs type="place" ref="ref:TCR01">Tott. Court road</rs> to eat modestly and see news reel: after visit from <rs type="person" ref="ref:Gl1">Glendinning</rs> fixing up <bibl><rs type="cita" ref="ref:APP">Ant</rs></bibl> contract.

               <p>I was so happy to be able to speak to you for the first time since you went to Spain. I will see you then, on Wed 9th

I will have to go back on the 15th to <rs type="place" ref="ref:Sut01">Sutton Veny</rs> as I have to get my school things in readiness for the <unclear reason="crossed out"/> 18th.</p>
               <p>I am so looking forward to seeing <rs type="person" ref="ref:SG1">Sam</rs> and <rs type="person" ref="ref:DG1">David</rs> this afternoon as it is so infernally dull without them.</p>
               <p>Last night it was very funny when the wireless was switched on to very vulgar comedy. Grandmother looked up suddenly 
and said <q>Is that English?</q> thinking that we had got on to a foreign station.</p>
               <p>I am awfully excited about <rs type="person" ref="ref:JN1">Jenny</rs> and 
the probability of jobs. I will ask <rs type="person" ref="ref:DG1">David</rs> what he knows about them.</p>
               <p>We had lovely weather up here for a few days but now that the boys are turning up it turns unpleasant again.</p>

            <p>Mr. <rs type="person" ref="ref:Mc1">M.</rs> took me to buy lobsters at a big breeding ground <del hand="ref:h_RG">near</del> 
               <add hand="ref:h_RG" place="supralinear">at</add> Warsal.  In evening to <rs type="place" ref="ref:SoH01">Southampton</rs> &amp; saw Eddie Cantor in "Strike me Pink"<note>1936 comic movie directed by Norman Taurog eds.</note>.</p>
            <p>Over radio news of withdrawal of <rs type="place" ref="ref:Maj1">Majorca</rs>n expedition.  Mr. <rs type="person" ref="ref:Mc1">M</rs> pro-rebel, gradually his views mildening.

            <p>A car-ride to <rs type="place" ref="ref:BeA01">Beaulieu Abbey</rs> and New Forest generally – very bare, heather, ponies.  Through <rs type="place" ref="ref:SoH01">Southampton</rs>.  Coffee, &amp; a handbag for <rs type="person" ref="ref:LR1">Laura</rs>.</p>
            <p>Work all evening but for radio hour.</p>

Decided to have talk with me after <add hand="ref:h_RG" place="supralinear">my</add> seeing the <bibl><rs type="cita" ref="ref:Cla">Claudius</rs></bibl> scenario.  Offered to be with us at <rs type="person" ref="ref:JN1">Jenny</rs>'s <rs type="place" ref="ref:Dor02">Dorchester</rs> opening.</p>
            <p>Met <rs type="person" ref="ref:CN1">Catherine</rs> at <rs type="place" ref="ref:Pad01">Paddington</rs>: supper in a pub off <rs type="place" ref="ref:Oxf01">Oxford St.</rs>  Went with her alone to a cinema – <hi rend="text-decoration: underline;">Secret Agent</hi><note>1936 movie directed by Alfred Hitchcock eds.</note> – came out when climbing precipices started.</p>

            <p>Supper with <rs type="person" ref="ref:NC1">Norman</rs> at <rs type="place" ref="ref:Pra01">Prada</rs> – he has quarrelled with <rs type="person" ref="ref:DT1">Dylan Thomas</rs> because <rs type="person" ref="ref:DT1">D.</rs> threw a drunken party in <rs type="person" ref="ref:NC1">Norman</rs>'s studio &amp; didn't clean up afterwards.</p>
            <p>Then went to <rs type="place" ref="ref:Che01">Chelsea</rs> to see if <rs type="organization" ref="ref:MG5">M.G.M.</rs> had used any of my <bibl><rs type="cita" ref="ref:RDC">Copperfield</rs></bibl> version in their film.  Awful.  Noticed an anachronistic banana <unclear>

            <p>Went down the <rs type="place" ref="ref:CaM02">Caledonian</rs> road looking for a table to replace the limed oak one in the living room – nothing.  <del hand="ref:h_RG">Feet ached</del> 
               <add hand="ref:h_RG" place="supralinear">Shin muscles</add> ached with the pavement.</p>
            <p>Anxiety about Spain.</p>
            <p>Going over <rs type="person" ref="ref:HK1">Harry Kemp</rs>'s &amp; <rs type="person" ref="ref:WH1">Ward H</rs>'s poems with <rs type="person" ref="ref:LR1">Laura</rs> for <bibl><rs type="cita" ref="ref:Ep3"><hi rend="text-decoration: underline;">Epilogue</hi></rs></bibl>.</p>

               <rs type="person" ref="ref:FR2">Richards</rs> came at 12.30 and stayed with us till 11 (news film).  He was very pleased &amp; talked a little too much: rejected food at <rs type="place" ref="ref:Pra01">Prada's</rs> as not in his line, but enjoyed cold supper at flat.  Told of <rs type="place" ref="ref:Bla01">Blaina</rs>'s unemployment problem – <q>all as happy as trout.</q>  Has just got his birth certificate clearing up the mystery of his birth.  His real name is <rs type="person" ref="ref:FR2">Francis Philip Woodruff</rs> &amp; his father was a colliery owner.</p>
            <p>Spanish news still more anxious.</p>
            <p>

            <p>I lunched with <rs type="person" ref="ref:GF1">Faber</rs> &amp; <rs type="person" ref="ref:Fr3">Morley</rs> at <rs type="place" ref="ref:Sim01">Simpsons</rs> – with <rs type="person" ref="ref:FR2">Richards</rs>.  After hot brandy at a pub with <rs type="person" ref="ref:FR2">R.</rs> &amp; <rs type="person" ref="ref:Fr3">M.</rs>  
               <rs type="person" ref="ref:Fr3">Morley</rs> was surprisingly better than I had expected.  I told him that <rs type="person" ref="ref:Au1">Auden</rs> was a thief.  He agreed – 'a magpie'.  <rs type="person" ref="ref:GF1">Faber</rs> was surprised.  <add hand="ref:h_RG">Silverside, Stilton<note>cheeses eds.</note>, lager, port.</add>
