            <p>News from <rs type="place" ref="ref:Mad01">Madrid</rs> bad again.</p>
            <p>
               <rs type="person" ref="ref:GG1">Gordon</rs> has once more broken with <rs type="person" ref="ref:Mo1">Molly</rs> 'finally'.</p>
            <p>Note of protest to <hi rend="text-decoration: underline;">

               </hi> for saying I had given up poetry.</p>

	Up at 7.30 packing up all our belongings.  From <rs type="place" ref="ref:Maj1">Majorca</rs> we brought two suitcases and a basket.  We now had these two suitcases, two handbags, a hamper for books, a crate for china, two tables, two chairs, and a lot of other stuff: we took a van.</p>

               <rs type="person" ref="ref:MR3">Margaret</rs> turned up; for an interview with <rs type="person" ref="ref:MS1">Maisie</rs> at 6, helped us get in, helped me hang the two <rs type="person" ref="ref:JA1">J.A.</rs> pictures.</p>

               <rs type="person" ref="ref:LR1">Laura</rs> went to Troy lecture at <rs type="place" ref="ref:Brl01">Burlington House</rs>,  I rested.  Boil troublesome.</p>
            <p>I used lapis with silver-lustre beads &amp; strung on necklace.</p>

Present <rs type="person" ref="ref:CS1">Mrs Charles Sims</rs>, architects <rs type="person" ref="ref:HS2">Hazen Sise</rs> &amp; <rs type="person" ref="ref:AC1">Chitty</rs>, the <rs type="person" ref="ref:EG2">Goldfinger</rs>s.  <rs type="person" ref="ref:JN1">Jenny</rs> &amp; I went off to <hi rend="text-decoration: underline;">Libelled Lady</hi><note>1936 <rs type="organization" ref="ref:MG5">MGM</rs> film starring Jean Harlowe &amp; Spencer Tracy eds.</note> at <rs type="place" ref="ref:Emp01">Empire</rs>;  <rs type="person" ref="ref:LR1">Laura</rs>, <rs type="person" ref="ref:DR1">David</rs>, <rs type="person" ref="ref:KG1">Karl</rs> to Revue<note>a non-stop <q>Revuedeville</q> eds.</note> at <rs type="place" ref="ref:Win01">Windmill</rs> – dreary.  <rs type="person" ref="ref:JN1">Jenny</rs> &amp; I food at <rs type="place" ref="ref:Rul01">Rules</rs> oyster soup, <rs type="person" ref="ref:JN1">Jenny</rs>, corn on cob.  Then saw her to <rs type="place" ref="ref:Dor02">Dorchester</rs>.

            <p>
               <rs type="person" ref="ref:VC1">Viscount Carlow</rs><note>Irish peer KG</note> rang me up and I went to see him: talked over <bibl><rs type="cita" ref="ref:TLB">Lawrence</rs></bibl> book position.  Showed me his books &amp; paintings &amp; was extremely nice.  Wanted to clear up whole position.</p>
            <p>
               <rs type="person" ref="ref:JN1">Jenny</rs> to lunch.  Talked over scenario treatments with her.  <rs type="person" ref="ref:LR1">Laura</rs> gave her pansy ring.</p>
            <p>In afternoon <rs type="person" ref="ref:RW3">Rebecca West</rs> came, &amp; discussed woman question with <rs type="person" ref="ref:LR1">Laura</rs>.  I was writing alternative passages for the offensive Belfrage chapter, for <rs type="person" ref="ref:VG2">Gollancz</rs>.</p>
            <p>Dinner: <rs type="person" ref="ref:EM2">Eddie</rs>, <rs type="person" ref="ref:DW1">Douglas West</rs>, <rs type="person" ref="ref:Ky1">O.K.</rs>, <rs type="person" ref="ref:MS1">Maisie</rs>, <rs type="person" ref="ref:LR1">Laura</rs>, me.  <foreign>Domecq Fundador Brandy 1874</foreign> popular;  &amp; <rs type="person" ref="ref:LR1">Laura</rs> started woman-power talk, <rs type="person" ref="ref:EM2">Eddie</rs> challenging, <rs type="person" ref="ref:DW1">Douglas</rs> doubtful, <rs type="person" ref="ref:Ky1">O.K.</rs> helpless – till about 12.30  <rs type="person" ref="ref:DW1">Douglas</rs> staying last.</p>
            <p>
               <rs type="person" ref="ref:Fr4">Franco</rs> definitely being beaten now, in eyes of world.

               <rs type="person" ref="ref:JN1">Jenny</rs> to lunch: talk of clothes as index of character.  <rs type="person" ref="ref:LR1">Laura</rs> going over translation<note>of <rs type="person" ref="ref:AR2">Rimbaud</rs> KG</note> with <rs type="person" ref="ref:NC1">Norman</rs>.</p>
            <p>Wrote more of <bibl><rs type="cita" ref="ref:Ref">Refugee</rs></bibl> story.</p>

               <rs type="person" ref="ref:LR1">Laura</rs>, <rs type="person" ref="ref:KG1">Karl</rs> &amp; I went to 'Rembrandt'<note>a film directed by <rs type="person" ref="ref:AK1">Alexander Korda</rs>, 1936 eds.</note> at <rs type="place" ref="ref:LSq01">Leicester Square</rs> Theatre.  The sets were wretched compared with Kermesse Heroique<note>see note November 7, 1936 eds.</note>, the subsidiary actors rotten, <rs type="person" ref="ref:CL1">Laughton</rs> acted <rs type="person" ref="ref:CL1">Laughton</rs>, but <rs type="person" ref="ref:EL2">Elsa Lanchester</rs> was very good.</p>
            <p>A news-interview with one 'Rhodes or Rose' who had been in Spain and deserted the militia, escaping as a British refugee when he saw that <rs type="place" ref="ref:Mad01">Madrid</rs> was bound to fall.

            <p>Fog and rain, but did not notice the weather.  All one notices is Sunday, when the traffic quiets down.</p>
            <p>After supper we walked to the <rs type="place" ref="ref:CaR02">Café Royal</rs>. (Rum &amp; coffee) Only 'failures' <del hand="ref:h_RG">that</del>
