Rang up Black as usual it being Monday about that £1000 which has not been paid yet. He advised me to write to Korda. I did.

News from Madrid bad again.

Gordon has once more broken with Molly 'finally'.

Note of protest to Book Society News for saying I had given up poetry.

Laura to Doctor. She is tired but clearly better. Jenny to lunch, & Julie, & Tom. Gave Jenny a silver gilt Chinese poison ring – pearls, green jade, a ruby (30/-) and she collaborated very competently with Laura in the Bulton scenariofor Claudius film eds..

Dinner with Rebecca West & Henry Andrews, Tom, Julie, Laura *at Boulestins. Woodcock (10/6 a go) Clos du Tart (red Burgundy,) figues flambéesfigs flambées eds.. Then to their flat at Orchard Court: where Ralph Isham came, mad as a hatter, talking fascism. I swung him round a pivot: appealing to his Anglo-Saxon faith in morale natural as opposed to Dagoterm of contempt (Sp. origin) eds. morale. He talked Lawrence "T.E.", or "D.H."? eds. & Boswell in maitre d'hotel accent. Laura said American top to his face, false European jaw. Laura wore red & gold turban, Julie's dress, the crystal buckle brooch on red silk.

Working again at 'The Jealous Man'

John and Lucie came.

Honor also. Bad news from Madrid.

Went to Watt with T.E.letters which Laura & I had gone over for possibles. Arranged for him to sell them, not giving right to reprint.

Lunch at Prada Lots of friends about Sherry party at Tom & Julie's. Heard from Schw & Anita that only way to get letters to Mallorca is via Italy. Present: L, Karl, Tom, Julie, Honor, Norman, Len, Jane, John, Lucie, James, Gordon, Joyce, Sally, Jenny, Kyllmann, Bridget, Jeffrey Mark s"Marks" KG. J.H.P.? wrote on Spanish dancers KG, his sister, three friends of Tom's, myself.

(Lucie in lift with Honor & me told us that 2 people had been killed in it at different times. Morbid. It happened up the street at Glaxo works, a rope lift.)

To Constable's with Laura to talk about specimen page of Trojan Ending for which L is writing preface.

Lunch at Prada – Mrs Lloyd, John John's brother, Lucie, Tom, Julie, Karl, Gordon, Honor, Laura myself. Rested in afternoon. Pallas money came.

Supper with Tom, Julie, Karl, L & I at flat. Tom & Julie likes Honor best of new friends. (Gordon has plumped himself miserably at Arkesden).

To Dorchester L, Tom, Julie, & Maisie & I to see Jenny dance. Show much slicker. Jenny did an acrobatic show turn we hadn't seen before .. . Laura wearing white gold-brocaded jacket, red velvet skirt, red & gold cap, gold chain, black mantilla. Two Three bottles of champagne. excellent food including foie gras on chicken. Sent note round to Jenny by page signed 'Father'. She replied as opposite. Goodbye to Tom & Julie in taxi at 3. am.

Friday Nov 6th

Laura slept till 12 or so.

I wrote letters and things.

To Caledonian market.

Bought large patchwork quilt £2, old family teapot 1/-1 shilling eds., Wedgewood coffee pot 2/-, 18 more marbles at 1dpence eds. each, a number of lace bobbins with beads, – 3/9d3 shillings, 9 pence eds. in all, a pinchbeck clasp 5/- Sent Lucie clasp & the best ivory lace bobbins complete with beads, but first taking enough beads from the bobbins to make a necklace, which I did on dental floss with a 6d clasp.

Supper at Dinner at Ward and Dorothy L, K, I and A Chitty the architect of many a corset factory and penguin pool.

Walked home all the way down Primrose Hill. 40 minutes.

* Catherine for her half term. Went with her to Dodsworth Dodsworth (1936) directed by William Wyler eds. film, then to supper at España in Wardour St. Sad Catalan: Moros a la costa – no al Capital.? The expression is Moros en la Costa, which refers to the Barbary pirates. It came to mean "beware, someone is watching." The reference by the Catalan may be to the Moorish Regulars in the Nationalist (Franco's) army. "No, el Capital" means nothing unless it is referring to money as in capital. "No, a la capital" would mean "to the capital city." Either way, the meaning is not clear. WG Italian fascist at next table. Then to Kermesse Héroique La Kermesse Heroique or, Carnival in Flanders (1935) directed by Jacques Feyder eds.. French but good (Confessor, dwarf, duke, Burgomester Burgomaster mayor eds.'s wife) & Pavlova in a historical survey of her dances.

Then David Reeves came & with him & Maisie & Norman Lloyd Williams to a Reception at the Burgess Hill School where the young progressive masters stated their policy in illiterate English. At Guy's snackbar lately late, eating ices and reading of rebel ill-success at Madrid.

Still working at Before Bedlam.

Lunch at Prada with Bill Fuller who advised about Belfrage libel & Philip Horwood threat. John & Lucie came. With them to a tea-shop in New Bond St. Bill Fuller will write us a legal novel.

Excitement about Madrid: conflicting reports; but late special admitted that the rebels had been held up.

Bridget came. Restrung the Lapis amber & silver necklace: amber alone, the smaller pieces. Silver with cut-glass black beads (Catherine's present) in a double choker

Wed. Nov 11th (Armistice Day)

Up at 7.30 packing up all our belongings. From Majorca we brought two suitcases and a basket. We now had these two suitcases, two handbags, a hamper for books, a crate for china, two tables, two chairs, and a lot of other stuff: we took a van.

* Moved to 10 Dorset St.

2 minutes silence during the loading of the stuff: trumpeter on the roof of Trinity Church and everything frozen still except a loud angry voice from an Osnaburgh St Garage. Lunch at Rowan Tree.

Margaret turned up; for an interview with Maisie at 6, helped us get in, helped me hang the two J.A. pictures.

Laura went to Troy lecture at Burlington House, I rested. Boil troublesome.

I used lapis with silver-lustre beads & strung on necklace.

This leaves some amber over.

Thursday Nov 12

Madrid still holding out after four days.

Breakfast in bed – first time (except for the Axe at Arkesden) for a long time. Excellent home cooking.

To Ham: recommended oranges & rest. Said I have no 'sugar'.

On way back bought silver shell earrings 5/-, silver ring for myself 1/3d, and (6d) silver centrepiece for a necklace which I strung with black glass, garnet, silver lustre.

Laura bought Crown Derby sugar bowl (8/6)

Probably final version of Before Bedlam.

Restrung garnet necklace as choker.

In bed most of day.

Laura said to herself "I haven't done much work lately, but then I've been fighting so hard in Spain."

Honor & Gordon came. Honor well & happy; Gordon has been behaving nicely.

Honor slept on camp-bed in Laura's room.

It occurs to me to ask you what you have got.

I mean,: besides an admiration for the New Yorker New Yorker Magazine eds., broad-minded tolerance of Lesbians and the laughter of Little Audrey, realism, and a bold revival of the Victorian 'this is a work of art.'

Obviously you have something that you think a lot of greatly prize, or you wouldn't write review so recklessly always.

Is it something you have written or are writing, or merely something physical – a musk-gland or whatnot? If the former, I should like to see it.

Two verses, quoted from Wilfred Owen and Auden. Gloomy, sissy voice. We heard it relayed, the hall being crowded, with gloomy preface by Herbert Read.

Most critical day of Madrid fighting. Some of Franco's men across river, but Govt Government strong on flanks. All headlines starring Franco's claims at expense of Govt Government .

Wrote to Deyá via Vives of Marsellia & Tio Pedro's cousin in Rome.

Jenny & Martha Smith to lunch. Jenny tired, has rheumatics, & depressed by an attempt at blackmail re one of the a coloured trumpeter.

Tap dancing overhead. Landlord sent a man who will complain.

To dentist: his electric drill had broken down. Appointment Tuesday is Appointment & Laura's (to her great relief) put off. Bought pewter cigarette case 7/6. Mother came. To Ministry of Health to get my cottage uncondemned. Can do nothing. No one can do anything. The Law must take its course. Mother presenting her woodland to the National Trust, brought deeds. Am trying to present my cottage with it. Macleod Matheson appears to be the boss.

Mother to lunch: surprisingly well.

Laura to last day of Cretan exhibition. Bought me braces.

Surprising £143 from Germany.

To Bank to fix up sending £100 in L's name to Short's bank at 216 Church Road Hove, & for them to inform him of the transfer via Consul Barcelona, via Foreign Office. This effected. Visited John, much better. Rang up Foreign Office, W. Pollock, who will let Short know by telegram. Bought Honor copper coal-scuttle, 17/6; & tartan egg-boiler 2/6.

Norman & Betty to lunch, then Laura & Norman did Rimbaudtranslations eds togetherNorman Cameron later published two translated volumes of Rimbaud's poetry eds..

Boil still troublesome, but feeling very well in myself.

To Moraina of Spain in Brewer's yard to buy wine (Fascist Spanish boss, pro- Govt Government clerk.) Rioja Blanco 6 6 bottles & Negro 6 6 bottles and 1874 Brandy 1 1 bottle – 61/- in all.

To Jaegars. Jenny made me buy a Vicuna coat for £22; also I got a vicuna scarf 22/- and warm gloves. To Allen: ordered a new (blue) suit & a grey-blue waistcoat. Then to Spotted Dog in Burton Mews. Met Pat Moran and Tony Wheeler. Tony Wheeler hardboiled, married, speaking against Jenny living alone without a background — you'd only get a chap like Pat ," if you wanted to marry. Letter from Rennes: Senores Señors of Son Beltran and Moli collecting for Trabajo para los pobres Struggle for the poor eds. in France. 3,000,000 francs raised. Anita not sending: is not sure whether it will be used for right purposes. A.G. to tea, and said goodbye. Laura to Fortnum & Mason for presents to Can Caballo Schwartz & Strenge KG: & button presents for Lucie, Maisie etc

* Saw Winston. Told him of the importance of his coming out strongly for British prestige. He said Both sides imbued with blood – country wouldn't stand intervention. I referred him to cinema audiences. He asked Do you wish for intervention? I said Not in any sense of taking sides in Spain but of defending British interests in Mediterranean. He said 7 French Deputies have just been making frantic appeals to me to urge intervention – best brains in country. Lamented British military weakness. All Baldwin's fault. Most pessimistic. Equal chances of victory or defeat, if war. Thanked me for coming. Will make a speech tomorrow that hopes will please me.

But I had got him into a state – rushing up and down the room. "What can we do? Baldwin is in power and Parliament is lethargic." I said not so lethargic as you think. Speak out and youll you'll have an overwhelming popular following. Everyones Everyone's waiting for it. I said Press propaganda does not represent the country's feelings – look at Rooseveldt Roosevelt 2-1 victory when press 3-1 against him.

Missed supper: ate bread & cheese & candied melon with Mrs Fuller Bill Fuller's mother? or wife? eds., Bridget, Bill to coffee .. . Bill advised me as to libel in the letter I sent to the Trustees T.E.Lawrence trustees eds. (mentioning T.E.'s disparaging opinion of Savage & his hostility) endorsing L.H. and asking for return of contribution to Fifty Lies about Lawrence. Bill talking some thoughtless nonsense about women in positions of responsibility; but was gently laughed at by all.

Wed. 25 Nov

Watt sent typed letters of T.E. to me. They are being offered to Messrs Walt Maggs for sale. Telephone talk with Sally.

Took Ward's photograph of AliceLaura's cat eds. to be passe-partouted"all-purpose"? eds. and accidently met Len: he came home to lunch & discussed the international situation (which absorbs everything) Thinking that England would isolate Italy from Germany and attack her within 3 months. L & I said no, no war.

* Had tooth out: left molar, with injection. The dentist expected an hour's work; but it came out all in one, not in pieces.

Jenny to supper: discussed the question of her living alone. Wanted to remain at Curzon House, but for the thefts.

Jenny & I food at Rules oyster soup, Jenny, corn on cob. Then saw her to Dorchester.

Viscount CarlowIrish peer KG rang me up and I went to see him: talked over Lawrence book position. Showed me his books & paintings & was extremely nice. Wanted to clear up whole position.

Jenny to lunch. Talked over scenario treatments with her. Laura gave her pansy ring.

In afternoon Rebecca West came, & discussed woman question with Laura. I was writing alternative passages for the offensive Belfrage chapter, for Gollancz.

Dinner: Eddie, Douglas West, O.K., Maisie, Laura, me. Domecq Fundador Brandy 1874 popular; & Laura started woman-power talk, Eddie challenging, Douglas doubtful, O.K. helpless – till about 12.30 Douglas staying last.

Franco definitely being beaten now, in eyes of world.

Laura, Karl & I went to 'Rembrandt'a film directed by Alexander Korda, 1936 eds. at Leicester Square Theatre. The sets were wretched compared with Kermesse Heroiquesee note November 7, 1936 eds., the subsidiary actors rotten, Laughton acted Laughton, but Elsa Lanchester was very good.

A news-interview with one 'Rhodes or Rose' who had been in Spain and deserted the militia, escaping as a British refugee when he saw that Madrid was bound to fall.

Alternately checking Honor's last chapter and doing the refugee scenario– 4000 words so far.

Fog and rain, but did not notice the weather. All one notices is Sunday, when the traffic quiets down.

After supper we walked to the Café Royal. (Rum & coffee) Only 'failures' that tonight there.

Laura had bad trouble at the dentist with teeth that reacted badly to injection joined us only for soup & coffee.
