            <p>Solace the kitten was given a collar with a bell;  caught a huge mouse &amp; chased it round the sitting room for hours.  (The bell was off temporarily).</p>

            <p>I rewrote the <bibl><rs type="cita" ref="ref:Red"><hi rend="text-decoration: underline;">Red Dog</hi></rs></bibl>, breaking up stanzas (morning &amp; afternoon) &amp; finished it.  Then worked again on the Note to the <bibl><rs type="cita" ref="ref:CPo">poems</rs></bibl>.</p>
            <p>A lovely day.</p>
            <p>Smoking too much.</p>

	To <rs type="place" ref="ref:Cra01">Cranleigh</rs> by bus &amp; back <add hand="ref:h_RG" place="supralinear">in morning</add> to be examined by Dr. Cameron on behalf of the <rs type="organization" ref="ref:SP3">Scottish Provident Insurance Co</rs>:  he took all the usual tests &amp; gave me a clean bill.  Said I had a <hi rend="text-decoration: underline;">low</hi> blood pressure, which accounted for occasional giddiness I get from standing but had no physical ill-advantages.  My lungs are perfectly normal. <add hand="ref:h_RG" place="intralinear"> I weighed just under 14 <choice>

            <p>Listened to <rs type="person" ref="ref:LR1">Laura</rs>'s Recommendations<note>for Part V, <bibl><rs type="cita" ref="ref:TWO"><hi rend="text-decoration: underline;">The World and Ourselves</hi></rs></bibl> eds.</note> which she has worked on all day<add hand="ref:h_RG" place="right">: for dealing with misbehaving countries.</add>

            <p>I have a lazy habit of writing in bed in my dressing-gown.</p>

               <add hand="ref:h_RG" place="supralinear">woman</add> I know.  I took her for a walk to get her at least <del hand="ref:h_RG">into</del> out of a confined space.  She talked &amp; talked about constipation, <unclear>bree</unclear>, communication in the ether (I said, afterwards, I was nearly asphyxiated; because <rs type="person" ref="ref:LR1">L.</rs> called her, afterwards, <rs type="person" ref="ref:EH1">Ether Herdman</rs>), <rs type="person" ref="ref:Ma7">Mallik</rs> &amp; his conflict-theory try-out in Nepal.  She came as a sort of emissary of <rs type="person" ref="ref:Ma7">M.</rs> who is finishing his philosophy book &amp; will then retire to the mountains, having done his duty by the race.  We took <rs type="person" ref="ref:EH1">Ether</rs> to <rs type="place" ref="ref:Gui01">Guildford</rs>, &amp; then <rs type="person" ref="ref:MR3">Margaret Russell</rs> &amp; <rs type="person" ref="ref:LR2">Leonard</rs> came and was perfectly sweet, with yarns about the Woods<note>her employers KG</note>.</p>

            <p>We talked &amp; played marbles (with <rs type="person" ref="ref:Mc1">Violet McCormack</rs>) &amp; the dreadful Usbornes came &amp; Mrs talked all about lending library books.</p>

               <rs type="person" ref="ref:LR1">Laura</rs> in bed all day: talk again about publishing situation.  And in evening with <rs type="person" ref="ref:AK2">Alix</rs> &amp; <rs type="person" ref="ref:HK1">Harry</rs>.</p>
            <p>I went for a walk on <rs type="place" ref="ref:HuH01">Hurtwood Hill</rs> &amp; got lost in a wood &amp; had to guess my way home by the sun.

	Funny day.  Hot &amp; dull.</p>
            <p>1)	I had a letter from <rs type="person" ref="ref:AG1">A.G.</rs> to whom <rs type="person" ref="ref:CG1">Charles</rs> &amp; <rs type="person" ref="ref:PG2">Peggy</rs> had accused me of starving <rs type="person" ref="ref:JN1">Jenny</rs>.  I wrote to <rs type="person" ref="ref:JN1">Jenny</rs>, ordering her to break with <rs type="person" ref="ref:CG1">Charles</rs> unless he apologised &amp; retracted, and to <rs type="person" ref="ref:AG1">A.G.</rs> informing her of this.</p>
            <p>2)  <rs type="person" ref="ref:LR1">Laura</rs> after a long break, looking very pale started 
work, but didn't get far.</p>
            <p>3).	<rs type="person" ref="ref:KG1">Karl</rs> has been told by <rs type="person" ref="ref:MG1">Marie</rs> that she doesn't like us enough for her to want to marry him: &amp; given notice.</p>
            <p>4)	<rs type="person" ref="ref:AK2">Alix</rs> had customs troubles over cheese.</p>
            <p>5)	<rs type="person" ref="ref:HK1">Harry</rs>'s tutored pupil flunked again.</p>
            <p>6).	Sweet letters from <rs type="person" ref="ref:La2">Lucie</rs><note>
                  <rs type="person" ref="ref:JM2">Julie</rs> KG</note> – <rs type="person" ref="ref:TM1">Tom</rs> now Commissar of Culture

	Announced as a lucky day for Capricornists (<rs type="person" ref="ref:LR1">Laura</rs> etc) by Petulengro<note>Eve Petulengro, famous Romany Gypsy astrologer eds.</note>: but shortly after breakfast she had violent colic pains, &amp; almost sent for a doctor.</p>
            <p>I went over typed <bibl><rs type="cita" ref="ref:CBE"><hi rend="text-decoration: underline;">Belisarius</hi></rs></bibl> but most of day was with <rs type="person" ref="ref:LR1">Laura</rs>.  Bus to <rs type="place" ref="ref:Cra01">Cranleigh</rs>, where I bought camomile for <rs type="person" ref="ref:LR1">Laura</rs>, &amp; walked back.</p>
            <p>
               <rs type="person" ref="ref:AK2">Alix</rs> also rather ill: nerves: with repercussions.</p>
            <p>On the way home from <rs type="place" ref="ref:Cra01">Cranleigh</rs> the little girl who had two days ago said 'That fat man' and whom I had corrected with 'I am tall, not fat' said 'That fat man again.'</p>
            <p>
               <rs type="person" ref="ref:LR1">Laura</rs> did nothing but finish a poem '<bibl><rs type="cita" ref="ref:STW"><hi rend="text-decoration: underline;">Seizure of the World</hi></rs></bibl>'.</p>
            <p>It was a lovely day, for weather.</p>
