               <rs type="person" ref="ref:JL3">John Lucy</rs> sent me a letter (or rather enclosed one to <rs type="person" ref="ref:ML2">Mary</rs> in an envelope to me). (Also <rs type="person" ref="ref:HW1">Honor</rs> had a letter from a mysterious 'J. Coghlan' of Dublin – obviously the same hand<note>
                  <rs type="person" ref="ref:JL3">John Lucy</rs>'s eds.</note>). It contained a remark about England &amp; Ireland which should have gone to the War Office.</p>
            <p>Walk to <rs type="place" ref="ref:Kil01">Kilburn</rs>, brought back a Worcester platter for <rs type="person" ref="ref:HW1">Honor</rs>.</p>
            <p>
               <rs type="person" ref="ref:LR1">Laura</rs> writing letters.</p>
            <p>We play Bessie Smith<note>blues KG</note> records to drown the songstress next door.  She replies reproachfully with Handel's 'Largo'.

               <rs type="person" ref="ref:WH1">Ward</rs> &amp; <rs type="person" ref="ref:DH1">Dorothy</rs> to dinner.  <rs type="person" ref="ref:WH1">Ward</rs> going over poems with <rs type="person" ref="ref:LR1">Laura</rs> &amp; very historical about his bells story.  Also <rs type="person" ref="ref:AH1">Alan</rs> &amp; <rs type="person" ref="ref:Be2">Beryl</rs>.</p>
            <p>At 11.30 <rs type="person" ref="ref:LR1">L</rs> &amp; I worked till 3 on <bibl><rs type="cita" ref="ref:CBE">Belisarius</rs></bibl>.</p>

               <rs type="person" ref="ref:HW1">Honor</rs> &amp; <rs type="person" ref="ref:GG1">Gordon</rs> to lunch.</p>
            <p>A little sleep and a walk.</p>
            <p>Then to dinner at <rs type="person" ref="ref:NC1">Norman</rs>'s in his car with <rs type="person" ref="ref:AH1">Alan</rs> &amp; <rs type="person" ref="ref:Be2">Beryl</rs>, then to <rs type="place" ref="ref:MoR01">Mount Royal</rs> to a queer flat temporarily hired for <rs type="person" ref="ref:GG1">Gordon</rs> as <rs type="organization" ref="ref:BB2">B.B.C.</rs> representative on night-telephone.             <p>Then by bus 31 &amp; 29 to <rs type="place" ref="ref:CaM02">Caledonian Market</rs>.</p>
            <p>Bought cups &amp; saucers for Karl &amp; Marie &amp; for us two Olive spoons William Tukey George II and Walter Grundy, George III 30/-<note>30 shillings eds.</note> the pair.</p>
            <p>Everyone charming in the market.</p>

Spent a lot of time putting all my marbles into the 3 smaller jars in proper arrangement – exact fit.</p>

	A mad day: a plumber came to inspect my smelling wainscote.  And then again two Electric men for the leak in the kitchen, which they would not touch, so the plumber again who fetched a mate and had the kitchen linoleum &amp; floorboards up.  Also a telephone man to repair the extension; and <rs type="person" ref="ref:MS10">Miss Story</rs>, and the plumber had trouble with a pipe in the lavatory.  All this time it was raining. Then drying out the linoleum spread with gadgets against the kitchen wall.</p>
