            <p>Apparently nothing wrong.</p>
            <p>At <rs type="person" ref="ref:Mi6">Mr Mills</rs> got a Greek clay oil-lamp with <foreign>dolph</foreign><note>? eds.</note> 2/-<note>2 shillings eds.</note>
            </p>
            <p>In afternoon went into 15 shops with <rs type="person" ref="ref:HW1">Honor</rs> to buy her a lamp stand – no good.  Bought a copper-gilt chain for <rs type="person" ref="ref:LR1">Laura</rs>'s garnet purse 2/6<note>2 shillings, sixpence eds.</note>.  Tea with <rs type="person" ref="ref:LR1">Laura</rs> &amp; <rs type="person" ref="ref:LL1">Len</rs> at <rs type="organization" ref="ref:Se5">Selfridge</rs>.</p>

               <rs type="person" ref="ref:SG1">Sam</rs> came unannounced: had to be rescued from <rs type="place" ref="ref:KiC01">King's +</rs> by <rs type="person" ref="ref:KG1">Karl</rs>.</p>
            <p>Rang up <rs type="person" ref="ref:NN1">Nancy</rs>:  <rs type="person" ref="ref:CN1">Catherine</rs> too coming unannounced but <rs type="person" ref="ref:NN1">Nancy</rs> put her off.</p>

               <rs type="person" ref="ref:MS1">Maisie</rs>'s withdrawal from <bibl><rs type="cita" ref="ref:CLM">Protocol</rs></bibl> makes relationship unreal &amp; spoilt the day: <rs type="person" ref="ref:GG1">Gordon</rs> being affected <add hand="ref:h_RG" place="supralinear">
                  <emph>rather</emph>
               </add>.  <rs type="person" ref="ref:JA1">John</rs> &amp; <rs type="person" ref="ref:La2">Lucie</rs> there to tea, which was the nicest.  <rs type="person" ref="ref:HW1">Honor</rs> had beautifully shined up the house &amp; <rs type="person" ref="ref:JG2">Julian</rs> &amp; I played for a long time on the lawn with marbles I gave him – his first.  <rs type="person" ref="ref:JA1">John</rs> &amp; <rs type="person" ref="ref:La2">Lucie</rs> told how they had got a Father Walsh in for the hauntings, who was grateful: &amp; perhaps Benlow's unsaid prayers may cause the hauntings.

               <p>I am preparing my <bibl><rs type="cita" ref="ref:CPo"><hi rend="text-decoration: underline;">Collected Poems</hi></rs></bibl> for publication in the Autumn with <choice>

                  <rs type="organization" ref="ref:Ca10">Cassell</rs>, and was going to include a poem called <bibl><rs type="cita" ref="ref:LTP"><hi rend="text-decoration: underline;">Largesse to the Poor</hi></rs></bibl> written in 1930, first published in a limited edition <bibl><rs type="cita" ref="ref:TWE"><hi rend="text-decoration: underline;">To Whom Else?</hi></rs></bibl> (<rs type="organization" ref="ref:SP1"><hi rend="text-decoration: underline;">Seizin Press</hi></rs>) in 1931, reprinted in <bibl><rs type="cita" ref="ref:Pms"><hi rend="text-decoration: underline;">Poems 1930-1933</hi></rs></bibl> (<rs type="organization" ref="ref:AB1"><hi rend="text-decoration: underline;">Barker</hi></rs>). Now I have just for the first time read your <hi rend="text-decoration: underline;">Secret Service</hi> in <rs type="person" ref="ref:GM1">Gwendolen Murphy</rs>'s <bibl><rs type="cita" ref="ref:MPo"><hi rend="text-decoration: underline;">Modern Poet</hi></rs></bibl> anthology<note>Church's poem "Secret Service" appeared on pp. 75-76 of this anthology, published in 1938. eds.</note> and am so struck by the resemblance of the two that if it should happen that yours was published first I should consider it my duty to suppress mine in favour of yours. That both are irregular blank verse accentuates the points of verbal and metaphorical similarity: the discontented pilgrim getting a room at the guest-house, flinging away the bunch of keys from his pocket to those who are to occupy the places he has left. The solution of the <add hand="ref:h_RG" place="supralinear">poetic</add> problem, of course, is different; but though it is perhaps a perfect coincidence, nobody who has read the two poems<del hand="ref:h_RG">,</del> (both of which have circulated widely<choice>
                     <sic>,</sic>

               <rs type="person" ref="ref:JN1">Jenny</rs> &amp; me in car.  Rather a Peace Pledge &amp; eyewash atmosphere but nice children &amp; nice grounds.  Turned a picture of Krishnamurti<note>J. Krishnamurti (1895-1986) Indian religious teacher eds.</note> back to wall, found a lost wedding ring – Rosalind's in As You Like It<note>Shakespearean comedy eds.</note> – heard Mr. Baddeley ex-Bedales<note>Bedales independent schools eds.</note> talk almost inaudibly – dreary story of blue bottle in Magic lantern.  Goodbye to <rs type="person" ref="ref:JG1">John</rs>, <rs type="person" ref="ref:JN1">Jenny</rs>, <rs type="person" ref="ref:AG1">A.G.</rs>   Dinner to the French <rs type="person" ref="ref:Pl1">Pleven</rs>'s, 11 Grosvenor Crescent<note>Westminster eds.</note>.  He is Breton, <foreign>Unanimiste</foreign>, sells telephones.  She is small witchlike unpleasant.  Excellent food &amp; cuisine.  Also Joan Evans<note>Dame Joan Evans,  (1893-1977), British scholar and author eds.</note> there, an expert on jewelry – also has written a psychological book about taste<note>
                  <hi rend="text-decoration: underline;">Taste and Temperament</hi> published 1939 eds.</note>.  Difficult &amp; even hostile evening</p>

               </choice> nearly 2 o'clock.</p>
            <p>A new word arose '<foreign>Gradek</foreign>' (from a German psychologist<note>see Diary entry 11 July 1938 KG</note> she believed in – or thought she still did) for something that nice people think nice from <del hand="ref:h_RG">old</del> 
               <add hand="ref:h_RG" place="supralinear">
                  <del hand="ref:h_RG">old</del> generous</add> ignorance that really isn't.

	Arrived 5.30 <rs type="place" ref="ref:SMa01">St Malo</rs>.  <rs type="person" ref="ref:JV1">Juan Vives</rs> met us in car &amp; took us to <rs type="place" ref="ref:Ren01">Rennes</rs> where we put up at <rs type="place" ref="ref:HoC01">Hotel Central</rs>.</p>
            <p>Crayfish, winkles (for first time) and very good food otherwise.</p>
            <p>Saw two magpies on the road to <rs type="place" ref="ref:Ren01">Rennes</rs>.</p>
            <p>
               <rs type="person" ref="ref:AA1">Anita</rs> wept on seeing us.</p>
            <p>We went to see a flat no 21 Rue Gurnant &amp; took it: only changing paper of one room.  We 'bought' furniture from him, because he mustn't rent a furnished room.  <rs type="person" ref="ref:AH1">Alan</rs> &amp; <rs type="person" ref="ref:Be2">Beryl</rs> also got a flat in 103 <rs type="place" ref="ref:RuN01">Rue Nantes</rs>.</p>
            <p>Spent a long time wandering round the streets: a lovely town.
