            <dateline><date when="1937-06">JUNE 1937</date></dateline>
            <p>

The month is consumed with the move back to England and <rs type="person" ref="#RG1">Graves</rs>' surgery for a fistula (diagnosed soon after his return to London). Travel, health issues and the renewal of old friendships leave almost no time for writing.</p>
            <p>
Though Graves and <rs type="person" ref="#LR1">Riding</rs> had originally given notice that they would leave <rs type="place" ref="#Lug01">Lugano</rs> on 1 June, the <rs type="place" ref="#Ewh01">Ewhurst</rs> house is not available until 18 June. They encounter difficulties renewing <rs type="person" ref="#KG1">Karl</rs>'s passport, and the work of packing and settling the account at Lugano seems to take longer and be more expensive than Graves anticipated. The last few days in Lugano are punctuated by the death of <rs type="person" ref="#EM3">General Mola</rs> in Spain.</p>
            <p>
But on 7 June, the trio leaves Switzerland behind and arrives in London to the welcome of friends and family. The next few days are a whirlwind of social activity, and Riding and Graves spend time with <rs type="person" ref="#AK2">Alix Eierman</rs>, <rs type="person" ref="#HK1">Harry Kemp</rs>, <rs type="person" ref="#AH1">Alan Hodge</rs>, <rs type="person" ref="#DH1">Dorothy</rs> and <rs type="person" ref="#WH1">Ward Hutchinson</rs> (and their baby daughter, Wanda), <rs type="person" ref="#HW1">Honor Wyatt</rs>, <rs type="person" ref="#NC1">Norman Cameron</rs> and <rs type="person" ref="#MS1">Maisie Somerville</rs>. Riding and Maisie's previous disagreement has blown over. A now-healthy <rs type="person" ref="#JN1">Jenny</rs> stops by to visit (and to borrow money), and Graves hears from <rs type="person" ref="#SG2">Sally</rs> that his brother <rs type="person" ref="#PG1">Philip</rs> (Sally's father) plans to marry <rs type="person" ref="#KP2">Kitty Palmer</rs>, a decision of which Graves does not approve, although he sends his brother his best wishes later in the month.</p>
            <p>
While still in Lugano, Graves had begun writing an account of his earlier poems, and work continues sporadically on <hi rend="font-style: italic;">The Kind Ghost</hi> (later <bibl><rs type="cita" ref="#KiG"><hi rend="font-style: italic;">The Swiss Ghost</hi></rs></bibl>). Graves and Riding also compose a letter to the <bibl><rs type="cita" ref="#Tel"><hi rend="font-style: italic;">Daily Telegraph</hi></rs></bibl>, which appears mid-month. Graves has a meeting with <rs type="person" ref="#AK1">Korda</rs>, who is still keen to do <bibl><rs type="cita" ref="#Cla"><hi rend="font-style: italic;">I, Claudius</hi></rs></bibl> next year, under better circumstances. Graves agrees to a contract for another film.</p>
            <p>
While in hospital recuperating from surgery, Graves has little energy to write, but manages to finish drafts of two poems, <q><bibl><rs type="cita" ref="#Led">Leda</rs></bibl></q> and <q><bibl><rs type="cita" ref="#Mer">Mercies</rs></bibl>.</q> Also while in hospital, Graves receives news that <rs type="person" ref="#JM1">Gelat</rs> has been released from prison. Weakened from the surgery and overwhelmed with relief, Graves weeps at the news. The month ends on an emotional note as well, with a visit from his sister <rs type="person" ref="#CG2">Clarissa</rs>, whom Graves had not seen for a decade.
</p>
            <p>
There are three enclosures this month:
