         <div xml:id="abstract_1939-05-01" type="abstract" n="1939-05-01">
            <dateline><date when="1939-05">MAY 1939</date></dateline>
            <p>
               <rs type="person" ref="#RG1">Graves</rs>' diary ends abruptly at the end of the first week of May. In this first week, he finishes the poem <q>Remembrance,</q> drafted in April, and notes that <rs type="person" ref="#SJ2">Schuyler Jackson</rs> has agreed to help with the <bibl><rs type="cita" ref="#Dic"><hi rend="font-style: italic;">Dictionary</hi></rs></bibl>. He also writes that <rs type="person" ref="#LR1">Riding</rs> seems unhappier, and that she has lost weight and is running a temperature. There is more talk about a <q><bibl><rs type="cita" ref="#PrT">Friendship Protocol</rs></bibl>,</q> but on Saturday, 6 May, Graves writes: <q>At this point the diary seems graveyard; so I stop it.</q>

There is one enclosure this month:  a draft of a poem by <rs type="person" ref="#RG1">Graves</rs>: <q><bibl><rs type="cita" ref="#MNi">The Moon Ends in Nightmare</rs></bibl>.</q>
