Jan 16 Monday

Laura's birthday. We gave her an azalea, & white flowers, & a cake with Laura and chocolate peppermints & each wrote her a letter: she had asked for 'no presents'. Karl sent her a cameo of Lucrece1.
Anita & Juan came (with a present of eau-de-Cologne & olives) & Juan said how much he hated the Catalans2.
We sent up 3 rockets for Laura & Laura's fellow-birthdays (Tom, Leonard Russell) and tried a S. Antonio3 bonfire but it was put out by torrents of rain.
Nono4 disappears every day. He goes into the loft & eats rats & mice & bats: comes in not hungry & quite wild.
