...The atmosphere up here is rather strained – Uncle John, Clo[DG] Clarissa, grandmother1 – all at loggerheads with each other and with us. The only thing I can do to amuse myself during mealtimes is to make Sam giggle, which brings forth mouthings from John & dignified silences from the other two....
